Doctors at Fortis Mohali revolutionize treatment of complex cancers via Immunotherapy, robot-aided surgery
early times report

Jammu, July 26 : The Department of Oncology, Fortis Hospital Mohali, has made remarkable progress by successfully treating patients suffering from complex cancer diseases through the most advanced treatment procedures such as Immunotherapy and Robot-Aided Surgery via the world’s most advanced 4th Generation Robot – Da Vinci Xi.
Dr Ketan Dang, Senior Consultant, Medical Oncology; and Dr Kuldeep Thakur, Consultant, Head and Neck Onco-surgery, Fortis Hospital Mohali, have treated several such patients, thereby giving them a new lease of life.
In the first case, a 53-year-old woman had been experiencing unbearable pain in the neck and arms owing to fracture of the C7 vertebra (seventh cervical vertebra) in the neck, which was causing neck pain, stiffness, and radiating pain or numbness in the arms. She approached Dr Ketan Dang at Fortis Hospital Mohali where medical investigations revealed that she was suffering from cancer of the cervix uteri (Stage 4), which had spread to her neck, specifically to the lymph nodes. The patient was at imminent risk of losing all her four limbs to paralysis.
The team of doctors led by Dr Ketan Dang treated the patient through Immunotherapy.
Immunotherapy is the latest treatment for cancer which strengthens the immune system by destroying the cancerous cells in the body, and stops the disease from progressing further. The procedure involves administration of medicines through the intravenous route (IV) along with chemotherapy and radiotherapy sessions. Following the Immunotherapy sessions, the Patient’s health condition improved drastically. She has recovered and is leading a normal life today despite Stage 4 cancer and even after four years of being diagnosed.
In another case, a 32-year-old woman had been experiencing severe stomach ache in her lower abdomen from the past 2-3 days. She met Dr Ketan Dang at Fortis Mohali where an ultrasound revealed ovarian cancer (Stage 3). The Patient was treated through Oral Targeted Therapy, after completion of chemotherapy and surgery.
In Targeted Therapy, drugs are used to attack parts of cancer cells that make them different from normal, healthy cells.
Shedding light on the case, Dr Ketan Dang, said, “Targeted Therapy is the latest and most advanced treatment for cancer available at Fortis Mohali and is administered either intravenously or orally as per the specific case. The procedure targets the affected area and destroys cancer cells.”
In yet another case, a 73-year-old man presented at Fortis Hospital Mohali with a non-healing wound on his right tonsil, which had spread to the palate. The symptoms had further worsened and had led to difficulty in chewing food. The Patient underwent a biopsy, which revealed cancer and required urgent need for surgery to address the rapidly spreading cancer. The patient approached Dr Kuldeep Thakur at Fortis Hospital Mohali where an MRI of the mouth and neck confirmed Stage IV Tonsil Tumor, which had also neck lymph nodes
Dr Kuldeep Thakur performed robot-assisted wide resection of the tumour through mouth and removal of the nodal disease from the neck through neck dissection. The surgery lasted for 3.5 hours with minimal blood loss. The patient had a smooth post-operative recovery and was discharged three days after the surgery. Her final histopathology report showed complete removal of the tumour. The patient has recovered fully, on adjuvant radiation therapy and regular follow up visits.
