| HC seeks status on evictions from forest land, questions delay in action | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 6: In a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by inhabitants of village Hari seeking direction to the respondents to initiate eviction proceedings against those who have encroached kanals of forest land falling in Compartment 51-A at village Hari in Surankote tehsil, The High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh has expressed concern over the lack of follow-up action on encroachment removal in Surankote, despite a scheduled eviction drive against 30 identified encroachers. Hearing a Public Interest Litigation filed by the inhabitants of village Hari, the Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Arun Palli and Justice Rajnesh Oswal noted that although the Range Officer Surankote had coordinated with the Sub-Divisional Magistrate for eviction on July 21, 2025, no further steps were reported. The Division Bench observed that no material had been placed on record to confirm whether the eviction was actually carried out. In response, the government counsel sought time to obtain instructions and file a short affidavit regarding the status of the drive. (JNF) |
