RSS calls high-level emergency meet in Delhi over US tariffs | | | Sanjay Pandita Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 16: In a significant development, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has convened an emergency meeting of its top leadership in the national capital on August 19 and 20. The meeting comes in the wake of the United States’ recent decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian goods—a move that has triggered serious economic and diplomatic concerns in New Delhi. The meeting will be presided over by RSS Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat and attended by key functionaries, including Sarkaryavah (General Secretary) Dattatreya Hosabale, all six Sah-Sarkaryavahs (Joint General Secretaries), national office-bearers, and senior representatives from various Sangh-affiliated economic wings such as Laghu Udyog Bharati, Sahakar Bharati, Swadeshi Jagran Manch, Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, and Bharatiya Kisan Sangh. The emergency meet follows the US government’s abrupt decision to impose a steep 50% tariff on a range of Indian exports. While India has formally objected to the tariff hike, Washington has not shown any sign of rolling it back, causing alarm in political and economic circles. The RSS, through its affiliated publications, has openly criticized the US move, accusing America of acting under the guise of promoting democracy while allegedly pursuing hegemonic trade practices. In recent editorial commentary, the Sangh described the US as “a self-styled messiah of freedom and democracy” that “uses economic tools to undermine the sovereignty of other nations.” According to sources, the two-day meeting will focus on assessing the impact of the US tariff decision and evolving a strategic and coordinated national response. Around 50 to 60 delegates, including economists, trade experts, RSS-aligned industrial bodies, and possibly BJP leaders and central government officials, are expected to participate in the deliberations. “This is not a routine RSS coordination meet,” a senior Sangh functionary said. “The presence of the Sarsanghchalak and Sarkaryavah underlines the seriousness of the issue and the urgency to frame a broader national strategy.” The unusual move of the RSS’s top brass engaging in direct economic policy discussion underscores the gravity of the situation. While the Sangh usually stays behind the scenes on economic matters, the leadership’s direct involvement signals its intent to actively contribute to shaping India’s response to what is being seen as an aggressive trade maneuver by the US. The deliberations are expected to cover policy suggestions, industry resilience mechanisms, and nationalistic economic initiatives to minimize dependency on foreign markets and safeguard Indian industries, particularly in the MSME sector. The emergency meeting, chaired by Mohan Bhagwat, reflects the RSS’s deepening engagement with critical national issues that extend beyond social and ideological boundaries. As the US-India trade tensions unfold, the Sangh is positioning itself as a key player in influencing the discourse around economic sovereignty, national resilience, and policy direction. |
