KVK Reasi promotes Lemon Grass Cultivation in Monkeys Prone Areas | | | Early Times Report
Reasi, Aug 18: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the aegis of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu (SKUAST-J) is promoting and educating the farmers on the lemon grass farming in monkeys prone areas of Reasi district. KVK Reasi is working under the dynamic stewardship of Hon’ble Vice Chnacellor, Prof. B.N. Tripathi and able guidance of Director Extension, Prof.Amrish Vaid of SKUAST-J. Chief Scientist & Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Reasi, Dr. Banarsi Lal said that some areas of Reasi distt. are badly affected by the monkeys menace as the major crops of these areas are damaged by the monkeys. He informed that lemongrass crop is not damaged by the monkeysa and this crop has great demand in the aroma industry. He further informed that this crop has numerous ecological, medical, agricultural, nutritional and economic benefits.He further said that lemongrass farming has an immense potential in these areas. He informed that lemongrass is a multicut and perennial aromatic grass which is not damaged by the animals and monkeys. He added that KVK Reasi is making strenuous efforts to minimize the effect of monkey menace in the areas and for that purpose KVK is technically supporting the farmers for the scientific cultivation of lemon grass farming. He said that lemongrass is not damaged by the monkeys and other animals and farmers can generate more income and employment by commercialising its cultivation. He further said that lemon grass possesses number of medicinal uses such as carminative and insect repellent, perfumes, cosmetics, herbal teas and non-alcoholic beverages. He added that lemon grass oil has strong lemon-like fragrance, due to high percentage of citral in its oil and by selling this oil farmers can enhance their income and employment. He informed that once the lemon grass crop is planted in the field it remains for more than five years in the field and under rainfed conditions, three harvests are feasible during the first year, and 3-4 in subsequent years, depending on the management practices followed by the farmers. He expressed that many farmers of the area are coming forwards in the lemon grass farming as this grass has immense potential in the region and can be grown by the farmers in their fallow land. He highlighted the cluster approach in its cultivation and urged farmers to grow it collectively. He emphasized on the value addition in the lemon grass oil to fetch more returns. He also said that if grown commercially, lemongrass can be a profitable crop to the farmers and can provide a sustainable livelihood support for the farmers. After observing the success of the lemongrass farming in the district, many new farmers are showing keen interest towards its farming. |
