He added that KVK Reasi is making strenuous efforts to minimize the effect of monkey menace in the areas and for that purpose KVK is technically supporting the farmers for the scientific cultivation of lemon grass farming.
He said that lemongrass is not damaged by the monkeys and other animals and farmers can generate more income and employment by commercialising its cultivation. He further said that lemon grass possesses number of medicinal uses such as carminative and insect repellent, perfumes, cosmetics, herbal teas and non-alcoholic beverages. He added that lemon grass oil has strong lemon-like fragrance, due to high percentage of citral in its oil and by selling this oil farmers can enhance their income and employment. He informed that once the lemon grass crop is planted in the field it remains for more than five years in the field and under rainfed conditions, three harvests are feasible during the first year, and 3-4 in subsequent years, depending on the management practices followed by the farmers. He expressed that many farmers of the area are coming forwards in the lemon grass farming as this grass has immense potential in the region and can be grown by the farmers in their fallow land. He highlighted the cluster approach in its cultivation and urged farmers to grow it collectively. He emphasized on the value addition in the lemon grass oil to fetch more returns.
