Kishtwar cloudburst: Authorities preparing accurate list of missing persons | Amid confusion and conflicting reports, administration begins verification drive; Many pilgrims return home | | Atul Sharma Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 18: In the wake of the catastrophic cloudburst that hit Chishoti village in Kishtwar district on August 14, the local administration is racing against time to prepare a comprehensive and authentic list of missing persons, even as conflicting reports and unverified claims continue to circulate. The disaster, which struck the last motorable point along the Machail Mata Yatra route, led to massive devastation — flattening makeshift camps, washing away infrastructure, and leaving dozens dead or injured. However, the exact number of people missing remains uncertain, as many Machail Mata pilgrims were separated from their groups, went out of contact due to network failures, or continued their journey unaware that their families had reported them missing. Sources said that a number of Yatris who were previously reported missing have now returned home safely or are currently in transit. Many of them had abandoned their mobile phones or lost them in the chaos, while others took alternative routes out of the region after the cloudburst cut off major roads. “In some cases, families panicked when they couldn't reach their relatives and assumed the worst. But in the last 24 hours, we’ve received multiple reports of people safely reaching home,” said a senior official involved in the coordination of rescue and relief efforts. This has led to considerable confusion about the actual number of people untraceable, as initial estimates were based on informal reports, mostly from panicked families or community sources. To establish a clear and verified count, authorities have launched a multi-level data collection exercise. Deputy Commissioners across affected and home districts of the pilgrims have been instructed to collect full details of missing persons, including names, addresses, Aadhaar numbers (if available), and contact information. Special teams have been deployed to work with local police stations for missing person reports, Yatra registration records to verify participation and travel details, village and ward-level officials for community input and families of reported victims for updated information. Sources said the administration is prioritizing transparency and accuracy in the process, and the final list will only be released once cross-verification is complete. “This is not just about numbers; we need to ensure every name on the list is verified, and every family accounted for. Inaccurate reporting could lead to unnecessary panic or missed rescue opportunities,” the official added. Authorities admit that compiling the list is a complex and sensitive process, especially in light of the large number of pilgrims coming from remote areas across J&K and neighboring states. Moreover, the communication infrastructure is still partially disrupted in the disaster zone, further delaying direct confirmation from affected individuals. Many families, especially those from rural belts, are not able to update their status online or contact local authorities, leading to gaps in real-time tracking. In some cases, duplicate entries and incorrect spellings have added another layer of confusion, as have the absence of proper registration details for some pilgrims who joined the Yatra mid-route without formal documentation. Once verified, the government plans to make the final list of missing persons public, both to provide transparency and to allow for further citizen verification. “This list will help guide our ongoing rescue operations and provide clarity to concerned families. But it must be accurate, and that takes time,” said an administrative source. The list will include names, villages or hometowns, and any other relevant identification details, and may be made available via official websites and district administration portals. Authorities have also urged citizens to report any unaccounted-for individuals or updates through designated helplines and control rooms set up in each district. Officials have appealed to the public to remain calm and patient during this verification period and to cooperate with officials collecting information. They emphasized that every effort is being made to trace those still missing, and to ensure that families receive timely updates and support. “We understand the anxiety families are going through. Our teams are on the ground working day and night, but we also request families to update us if their relatives have returned or made contact,” the official said. As rescue and relief operations continue amid difficult weather and terrain, the administration is also focusing on rehabilitation efforts and long-term support for affected families, many of whom have lost loved ones, homes, or livelihoods in the disaster. |
