Sister confesses to killing sibling in Ganderbal’s ‘politicized’ minor’s murder case

Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 19: A sensational murder case in Ganderbal district that was initially reported as a kidnapping and killing by unknown attackers has been solved with the arrest of the victim’s elder sister, who confessed to the crime.
The case had been politicized by various groups before the truth emerged.
The highly politicized “kidnapping and killing” case of a minor girl in Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir has ultimately been revealed as a gruesome murder committed by the victim’s elder sister.
Although political parties, including separatist groups, attempted to give the incident a different interpretation to instigate people against non-locals, swift police action in solving the case foiled the nefarious designs of anti-social elements who tried to connect this incident with the abrogation of Article 370.
Two days ago, a minor girl was allegedly kidnapped and killed by unknown attackers in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district. Her elder sister, who was also reportedly abducted, claimed that she managed to escape from the kidnappers.
Following the incident, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ganderbal, Khalil Poswal, stated that the girl, believed to be around 14 to 15 years old, was allegedly kidnapped near her home along with her sister. Her body was later found on the Batsar–Sehpora road.
“We received information about the death of a minor girl. Initial investigation revealed she had been kidnapped near her residence. Her sister, who was also taken, managed to escape and is being treated in hospital,” SSP Poswal told media persons on Sunday after the horrific incident.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to probe the case. A case under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (murder) has been registered. Forensic teams and investigators from Srinagar joined the investigation.
“Some evidence has been recovered from the scene. We are analyzing CCTV footage and conducting technical investigations. We’re confident the case will be solved. I urge people to stay calm and cooperate,” Poswal said.
A medical board was also constituted to ensure a thorough post-mortem and examination. SSP Poswal later visited the victim’s family and assured them of a fair and swift investigation.
Victim’s Sister Arrested
Two days after the incident, Ganderbal police arrested the elder sister, who confessed to killing her minor sibling.
Speaking to media persons, SSP Ganderbal, Khaleel Ahmad Poswal, said, “Yesterday, it came to our notice that a dead body had been found. We sent a police team there, and a girl’s body was discovered. We registered a case with FIR no. 29/2025 at the Kheer Bhawani police station.”
The SSP said that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was immediately constituted, and forensic experts from Srinagar were called to examine the crime scene in detail.
Initially, investigators considered the possibility that the girl had been kidnapped and killed after both sisters had left their home.
“Upon further investigation, it was found that the initial theories didn’t match. After examining all CCTV footage, it was learned that the elder sister had changed her clothes at a relative’s home, where blood stains were found and later recovered by police,” SSP Poswal said.
“It was also discovered that the elder sister’s hair was found in the deceased sister’s hands. Following this, the elder sister was interrogated. She initially tried to defend herself with false statements but later admitted to committing this gruesome act.”
The SSP said that during interrogation, the elder sister confessed that she and her sister had gone to their land, where they got into a dispute. In a fit of rage, she took an iron rod and struck her sister, injuring her. Out of fear and thinking she had committed a crime, she hit her sister again, causing her death.
Seeking to politicize the issue, Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti connected this incident to the vulnerability of women in the Kashmir Valley following the abrogation of Article 370.
Mirwaiz expressed anguish over the heinous killing of the minor girl in Ganderbal during what was initially believed to be a failed abduction attempt.
In a statement, Mirwaiz said the gruesome act had “extinguished a young life, devastated a family, and shaken the entire society,” while also exposing the vulnerability of women and children in Kashmir. He urged authorities to “immediately apprehend the culprits and award them the harshest punishment as a deterrent,” adding that only swift action could help restore public confidence, particularly among young girls.
Extending condolences to the bereaved family, Mirwaiz prayed for patience and strength during their time of grief.
He further stressed that safeguarding the lives and dignity of women and children was a shared responsibility of both society and institutions, and called for collective efforts to ensure such tragedies are prevented in the future.
“Kashmir is witnessing a sharp surge in crimes against women. One more horrifying than the other. Hope @JmuKmrPolice ensures swift punishment to the culprits who kidnapped & brutally murdered a minor girl at Sephora, Ganderbal,” Iltija Mufti posted on social media after the incident.
