Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 4: In a landmark move under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS),the Jammu Police, PP Jourian secured the conviction of two individuals for public intoxication and disorderly conduct.The Hon'ble Court delivered its verdict on 01-09-2025, marking a progressive step toward reformative justice. The two individuals convicted are:- Ashwani Kumar, S/O Brita Ram, R/O Chak Kirpalpur, Tehsil Jourian, District Jammu. Sanjay Singh, S/O Chuni Lal, R/O Bale-da-Bagh, Tehsil Akhnoor, District Jammu. The incident occurred on 31-08-2025 within the jurisdiction of PP Jourian where both accused were found intoxicated and causing a public disturbance. Following the incident, they were arrested, medically examined, and produced before the Learned Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMIC), Akhnoor. In a noteworthy departure from conventional punitive measures, the Hon'ble Court sentenced the offenders to community service under Section 355 of the BNS, instead of imprisonment. They are directed to render community service from 02-09-2025 to 08-09-2025 at the Court Complex, Akhnoor. This decision reflects the spirit of the new criminal laws, which emphasize rehabilitation and community engagement over incarceration, especially in cases involving minor offences. The action taken by Jammu Police aligns with a constructive and reform-oriented approach to handling public misdemeanours, setting a precedent for future cases of similar nature. |
