SRINAGAR, Sep 8: Two soldiers, including a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO), were martyred in an ongoing encounter in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, where security forces have so far gunned down two unidentified terrorists, officials said. A joint cordon-and-search operation was launched in the early hours by the Army, CRPF and J&K Police in the Guddar forest area following specific intelligence input. According to the Army, vigilant troops noticed suspicious movement and challenged the suspects. The terrorists in hiding opened fire, triggering a fierce exchange of gunfire during which two terrorists were killed. Officials said that in the initial exchange of fire, three Army personnel, including a JCO, sustained injuries. Two of them later succumbed. The identities of the slain soldiers have not yet been disclosed In the cordon around the forest area. The identities and group affiliation of the two slain militants are being ascertained. Police said the operation was still in progress. Last month, Kulgam witnessed one of the longest anti-militancy operations in recent years, when security forces battled militants in the Akhal forests for 12 days. The operation ended with the killing of a local Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist, while two Army soldiers also lost their lives in the gunfight. |
