Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently stated that India’s ranking on the Global Innovation Index has gone up from 91 to 38 in the last decade, and exuded hope that it would secure a position among the top 10 in the next three years. Shah referred to the Startup India campaign launched under PM Modi’s leadership. It has started showing results as India now has the third largest startup ecosystem globally, and has made the country’s youth job creators from job seekers. By creating a conducive ecosystem through policy reforms, tax incentives, access to credit, incubation centres, and simplifying compliance norms, the government has empowered young innovators to take risks. This shift has allowed India to move from being a land of job seekers to a nation of job creators. Today, with the third-largest startup ecosystem in the world, India stands as a beacon of entrepreneurial dynamism. Behind this leap lies a confluence of factors. Digital India, with its focus on connectivity and digital infrastructure, has enabled even small-town entrepreneurs to dream big. The Atal Innovation Mission and its tinkering labs have nurtured a culture of problem-solving at the school level, instilling an entrepreneurial spirit among the young. Equally significant has been the democratization of finance through platforms like UPI, which has allowed millions to participate in the formal economy. Together, these have created fertile ground for startups spanning fintech, health tech, agritech, space tech, and green energy. The rise in global innovation rankings reflects international recognition of these structural changes. Innovation is not just about patents and technology, but also about resilience and adaptability. Indian startups have demonstrated this during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, where they swiftly developed digital tools, healthcare solutions, and supply-chain innovations that saved lives and livelihoods. Amit Shah’s assertion underscores the fact that innovation is no longer a luxury—it is a necessity. For India, breaking into the top 10 of the Global Innovation Index will not merely be about prestige but about positioning itself as a global hub of knowledge, creativity, and enterprise. If the past decade has been about laying the foundation, the coming years must be about scaling heights. India’s innovation story is one of confidence and conviction. With the right mix of policy support, entrepreneurial energy, and societal inclusiveness, the dream of becoming a global innovation leader is within grasp. |
