Jammu, Sept 24: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, on Wednesday urged people to remain calm and maintain peace. In a statement, Gupta said forces deployed in the town carried only lathis to manage the situation after a bandh call was given by certain organizations. “After joining the hunger strike venue, some miscreants, without provocation, started pelting stones at the forces deployed to maintain peace,” he said. “With a dangerous game plan, they attacked a CRPF vehicle while personnel were inside and even attempted to set it on fire to burn the jawans alive,” the LG alleged. He further disclosed that the vehicle of the Director General of Police (DGP) was also attacked with heavy stones and rods. Gupta warned that those involved in the violence would not be spared and assured strict action against conspirators. “The hunger strike was peaceful for the last 15 days, but in recent days, threats were being issued to attack offices of political parties and houses of politicians,” he added. The LG also expressed concern over attempts by some elements to draw parallels between Ladakh and countries like Bangladesh and Nepal to instigate the youth. Questioning the timing of the violence, Gupta said, “The Centre has already invited Ladakh’s agitating groups for talks on October 6, and the names of participants were finalized by them. I fail to understand why such protests were organized just days before the dialogue.” Authorities, he informed, have begun identifying those responsible for Wednesday’s violence. Gupta appealed to Ladakh’s youth not to fall prey to “the nefarious designs” of miscreants. |
