Jammu, Oct 7: Prominent Congress leader and DDC Suchetgarh, Taranjit Singh Tony, has appealed to the Congress high command to consider a Sikh leader from Jammu and Kashmir for nomination to the Rajya Sabha, highlighting the need for adequate minority and regional representation in Parliament. In a statement issued in Jammu, Tony urged Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, senior leaders Rahul Gandhi, Digvijay Singh, and Tariq Hameed Karra, and the party’s central screening committee to give due recognition to the Sikh community’s contribution and sacrifices in Jammu and Kashmir. Tony said that minorities, particularly Sikhs in J&K, have been among those who faced severe challenges in recent years, and their inclusion in the Upper House would send a strong message of equality and reassurance. “The Sikh community in J&K has stood firmly with the Congress through every challenge. Yet, despite their significant role in the region’s social and political fabric, they remain underrepresented in Parliament. It is time the party leadership gives them their due voice in the Rajya Sabha,” Tony said. “Congress has always championed inclusivity and secularism. I urge our top leaders to take cognizance of this genuine demand from Jammu and Kashmir’s Sikh minority, and consider at least one Sikh leader for the Rajya Sabha seat,” he emphasized. Tony expressed confidence that the Congress leadership will uphold the party’s legacy of diversity and justice, ensuring that every community — including Sikhs — finds fair representation in national forums. |
