NC Calling Shots | | | After denying a safe seat to the Congress for the Rajya Sabha, the National Conference has almost conceded the Nagrota assembly seat to the grand old party. According to the media reports, Congress leadership in J&K is unhappy with its coalition partner NC for sidelining the party. The leaders have been demanding respect and accommodation as a partner in the coalition. However, the NC has kept the party at bay. After being denied the safe Rajya Sabha seat, many Congress leaders had demanded the party should pull out from the coalition. The rift between the two partners is evident as the senior partner National Conference seems undeterred by threats and has been getting away with everything. The Congress and the NC had positioned themselves as natural allies against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to consolidate the anti-BJP vote in J&K. But without mutual trust and equitable partnership, this alliance has become counterproductive. Out of 90 assembly seats the NC won more than 40 seats in the 2024 elections, while the Congress could only manage six seats. The party got a drubbing in its own bastion i.e. Jammu. The NC from the day one has sent a clear message to its alliance partner that it can run the government without the Congress support. Coalition politics, by nature, thrives on consensus, respect, and flexibility. The NC and Congress must remember that their strength lies in complementing each other’s presence across regions—the NC with its deep roots in Kashmir Valley and the Congress with its pan-J&K network and national appeal. The alliance seems to be collapsing due to arrogance or miscommunication, it will only benefit their common adversaries. The message for both parties is clear: introspection is overdue. The Congress must assert its relevance, but with restraint and strategy, while the NC must realize that partnership cannot flourish without parity. The future of their alliance—and perhaps of opposition politics in Jammu and Kashmir—depends on how sincerely both sides can mend these widening cracks. For the Congress, continuing in a partnership where it feels disrespected could erode its morale and credibility among workers and supporters. The situation demands political maturity and not public posturing. It appears that both NC and Congress are out to score “Brownie Points” over each other but it can lead to both the parties breaking away and treading different paths. |
