Statehood For J&K | | | Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently stated that restoration of Statehood to Jammu and Kashmir will be decided at an appropriate time. On who will decide “appropriate time” for restoration of Statehood, the Home Minister said it will be decided in discussions with him (Omar Abdullah). Shah reiterated that the Prime Minister and the Home Minister have made a statement on the floor of the House that the Statehood will be restored to J&K and people should have faith in the words. CM Omar Abdullah has completed one year in the office. Since the day he took charge, Omar has missed no opportunity to remind the Centre about its promise of restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. The J&K Chief Minister has been saying that the return of statehood is not only about constitutional status but also about dignity, representation, and identity. After the revocation of Articles 370 and 35A in August 2019 and J&K’s bifurcation into two Union Territories, the situation in the region has changed for the good. During the past six years, significant administrative and developmental changes have been implemented. The security situation has shown improvement, grassroots democracy through panchayat and urban local body elections has deepened, and economic initiatives have started bearing fruit. From a governance perspective, the Centre’s cautious approach is understandable. Restoring statehood requires not just a political decision but also confidence that the administrative and security situation is stable enough to ensure smooth functioning of state institutions. Amit Shah’s mention of engaging Omar Abdullah in discussions on the timing is significant. It hints at a more collaborative approach between the Centre and the elected leadership—an encouraging shift from earlier years when dialogue was limited. Such engagement could pave the way for a mutually agreeable roadmap, balancing the Centre’s security concerns with the people’s democratic aspirations. Ultimately, the question is not whether statehood will be restored—it will be—but when. The “appropriate time” must not become a euphemism for indefinite delay. From 2019 onwards a new chapter has been opened in J&K’s history. The region has witnessed unprecedented development. Pakistan sponsored terrorism and separatism stand buried. Situation has improved and things are moving fast. The Centre had promised delimitation, assembly elections and restoration of statehood. Of the three, two promises have been fulfilled and the third one will be fulfilled at an appropriate time. |
