Studying doesn’t have to feel dull or tiring with a few smart brain tricks
11/1/2025 9:38:43 PM

Vijay Garg

Most people think studying is about pushing harder. But your brain does not always work with pressure – it works with pattern, reward, and rhythm. Here are five simple tricks that help you enjoy studying and stay focused longer.
1. STUDY IN SHORT BURSTS, NOT LONG SESSIONS
The brain remembers better when you study in small, focused chunks. Try 25 minutes of study followed by a 5-minute break – the Pomodoro method. These short sessions help the brain reset and keep attention sharp.
After four rounds, take a longer 15-minute break. It’s easier to begin again when you know a break is near.
2. TURN LEARNING INTO A GAME
Gamify your study. Set small challenges, like scoring 10 right answers in a row or finishing a chapter before a timer ends. The brain releases dopamine - the same chemical linked to pleasure – when it hits a goal. This turns study from a task into a mini victory.
3. TEACH WHAT YOU JUST LEARNED
Explaining a topic out loud forces the brain to organise information clearly. When you teach someone else, you shift from passive reading to active understanding. Even if you talk to an empty room, you’ll find weak spots in your memory and strengthen them naturally.
4. CHANGE YOUR STUDY SPOT
The brain links memory to location. Moving between two or three study places — like a desk, balcony, or library corner — helps build stronger recall cues. Each change of setting refreshes focus and helps avoid monotony.
5. REWARD YOURSELF AFTER STUDY SESSIONS
The brain learns best when it expects a small reward. A short walk, a cup of coffee, or a few minutes on your phone after study signals the brain that learning has value. Over time, it begins to crave that productive rhythm.
Studying does not have to feel like a race against time. With the right rhythm and small wins, your brain starts linking study with satisfaction, not stress.
The trick is simple - stop fighting your brain and start working with it.
