Deciphering recent Raj Sabha elections
11/4/2025 10:03:16 PM
Omkar Dattatary

The results of the crucial Raj Sabha polls for four seats has since been revealed and the results have surprised none except as on expected lines three NC candidates who are seasoned, experienced and mature politicians have been declared victorious and to the amazement and astonishment of all including the political Pundits the fourth seat went to BJP as on this fourth seat BJP’s Sat Sharma has won the polls though through a cross voting of 4 NC legislators. The poll outcomes have revealed much and also concealed few things. The message from the election results is clear that NC has a strong position still in the politics of Jammu and Kashmir and its chief minister and vice-president Omar Abdullah is undisputed and assertive leader of Jammu and Kashmir and it was he who had selected and nominated all the four candidates for the Raj Sabha polls and it is totally a different story that the fourth candidate Imran Nabi Dar has not made to the polls as he did not won the polls because of the cross voting of the four NC legislators but it is not clear which four MLA’s have resorted to cross voting. The poll outcome of the Raj Sabha polls has given few messages and it is in the fitness of things to decipher the polls results as it has given certain messages and it will in fact shape the future politics of this sensitive border region which is grappling with many issues and problems. NC’s win in October 24 Raj Sabha Polls was dead sure however it needs to be analysed as on it largely depends the future politics of the Jammu and Kashmir UT. It is no political novice that the political analysts are decoding the names of the four legislators who did cross voting in favour of the BJP. The relations between two coalitions partners are soaring and are in a rough weather. But despite glaring differences with the NC government, Congress legislators voted for the NC candidates but one may say for the political compulsions because at the national level and in the current Bihar Assembly elections, the alliance between the Congress and RJD and thus the Congress MLA’s voted in favour of the NC candidates in the Raj Sabha polls despite their sharp differences. The important question is what direction will the politics of J&K take in near future but one thing is all most certain that the outcome of the Raj Sabh polls will lay the strong foundation of the politics in this region in a few months from now. The election results showed in no uncertain terms that Omar Abdullah has emerged a big winner, It was he who planned the victory of the NC candidates and he also wanted to win the fourth seat sans the cross voting. The choice of the candidates was super and it showed that the party under the leadership of Omar Abdullah has analysed the political arithmetic properly and so was the selection of the candidates most mature, it showed the maturity of the NC leadership and the chief minister Omar Abdullah proved right as the fourth seat which NC wanted to offer to Congress went to BJP and thus it vindicated the stand of the Congress. In Bihar Congress along with RJD is fighting a battle with BJP and the outcome of that Assembly results will to some extant determine the future of the alliance between NC-Congress. The help and support of the congress to the NC led coalition is needed the most for political stability of the NC government. On its part BJP did not like that congress should support the NC and the BJP must be at ease and even jubilant that Congress could not make it to Raj Sabha. However, Congress in its hearts knows that it was not justified in demanding 2 or 3 Raj Sabha seats being the party having meagre 6 seats in its kitty. One thing which was a miss in the recent Raj Sabha polls was the absence of the president of NC and ex chief minister Dr.Farooq Abdullah who is a tall leader of Jammu and Kashmir and respected at the national level also as he is a popular leader of India and he should have been consulted about the Raj Sabha candidate selection. It is another thing that he had made it clear that he would not fight the Raj Sabha polls this time. However, he should have been persuaded by the NC leadership to contest the polls. He is the direct heir of Sheikh Andulla’s legacy and he should not have been ignored. Farooq Abdullah commands much respect in J&K as well as in New Delhi and his voice is heard. Farooq should have been sent to Raj Sabha for raising the issues of Jammu and Kashmir in the parliament of the largest democracy of the world as his voice counts much even at the national level. All said and done it is his and NC’s decision. In fact, for Omar Abdullah this election has given several messages. One, that several MLA were shifting loyalties but it was only a rumour and now there is end to it. There seem no dissatisfaction and resentment within the rank and file of the NC. Next, he has shown that he can decide and guide the party and the state of affairs. Omar has sent the message that NC flock is not only together but can face the future challenges together. However, everything is not in favour of the NC and the chief minister. The issue of cross voting of four MLA’s is a serious matter and it cannot be overlooked and ignored. At last defaming and shaming the four NC legislators who did cross voting in favour of BJP is not that bad. On the face gaining the support of four NC MLA’s is for winning the fourth seat by the BJP. But more than that BJP is not reconciled to the ruling of the Jammu and Kashmir by the NC. At, the end it should be recognised by the NC and chief minister Omar Abdullah that whosoever rules at the centre, the JK rulers have to keep cordial relations with them and in this lies the good of Jammu and Kashmir and its political class.
