In fact, with ‘a Billion ‘Eyes on Them, India’s Women’s Lift Cricket World Cup. A team that faced seemingly insurmountable odds wins its first championship, with wider ramifications for the role women play in public life. It was not long ago here in Mumbai that Harmanpreet Kaur juggled a day job as a railway clerk with the gruelling training sessions young member of India’s national women’s cricket team. Away from her family and hometown in Punjab, Ms Kaur began her days at dawn—long hours of shuttling from morning practice to work and back again to an evening training session. Lunch was a bite on the train. Her biggest anxiety –Not finishing evening practice before rush hour and the departure of the final train ,which would leave her a 90 -minute walk home. When Ms Kaur stepped onstage in the same city after Sunday’s match, way past midnight and long after the last local train had departed, it was to collect the World Cup’s winning trophy as India’s captain. Her team had just beaten South Africa, notching its first-ever World Cup title. Fireworks went off ,and a crowd of about 40,000 roared in joy. It was a personal victory against once insurmountable odds. But it also spoke to the budding transformation of women’s sports in India, in line with the broader excitement around women’s sports globally right now. Cricket is hugely popular in the country of 1.4 billion people, a staple in homes across the nation, and generates hundreds of millions of dollars every year that sustains the sport globally. The women in India are slowly getting to share part of those riches, and glory could have much wider ramifications in a country still struggling with the role of women in public life.’’ We have been thinking for many years that we are playing good cricket, but that we still need to win a big tournament, ’’Ms Kaur .36, said after the victory. ’’Because without that, the revolution, change we want won’t come.’’ Smriti Mandhana , India’s vice- captain, said she hoped the milestone could bring a cultural shift.’’ The ultimate dream is to see a street cricket match with two girl’s team’s playing –there are a lot of girls who have started playing professionally –but just causally, for the love of the game, ’’she said in an interview on YouTube .’’A World Cup win will be a step towards that for sure.’’ The World Cup came to India at a sweet spot for the women’s game. The landscape began changing around 2017, when national players were given regular contracts. It allowed players like Ms Kaur to pursue cricket full time, even though the play was a fraction of the men’s and it offered job security only for the few who made it to the top. The women’s world cup’s overall pool of nearly dollar 14 million was a sharp increase from the previous tournament’s dollar 3.5 million. India’s own cash rich cricket body announced an additional bonus of more than dollar 5 million for its team’s performance. Fans turned in and around up in record numbers for many of India’s World Cup games. Both the semifinal and the final saw crowds of over 35000 -despite confusion around scheduling, and the last-minute ticket releases. The matches main digital broadcaster app showed over 300 million views of the final.’’ The people are valuing the game.’’ said Shaili Sathyu ,50,a theatre director who had waited patiently for the rain to clear before the final got underway after a two-hour delay,’’ But the sports’ management does everything to get in the way. ’’In fact, at the midnight hour on a magical Sunday, Harmanpreet Kaur and her incredible women made their tryst with destiny. India, was finally crowned world champions in women’s cricket. It was a journey marked by a long history of angst and joy, shaped by the sweat and dreams of pioneers such as Shantha Rangaswamy, Diana Edulji, Mithali Raj,and Jhulan Goswami .In a high -stakes final befitting an ICC World Cup India prevailed over South Africa by 52runs at Navi Mumbai’s D.Y. Patil Stadium, which turned into a teeming mass of raucous energy. This moment is as epochal as it was for Kapil Dev and his team in 1983when they seized the World Cup at Lord’s. Having faltered in the 2005 and 2017 World Cup finals, India also had to contend with the pressure of playing at home. When three league matches were lost on the trot against South Africa, Australia, and England, the knives were out on social media .Still ,the team persevered and every game produced a new star –Pratika Rawal, for instance. In the final, Shafali Verma and Deepti Sharma turned in an all-round show, while Smriti Mandhana was as solid as ever. Earlier, the turn towards glory happened in the semifinal when Jemimah Rodrigues anchored an astounding chase against defending champions Australia. Her unbeaten 127 is one of the greatest knocks in Indian cricketing history. India performed the giant killing act towards the climatic phase, so too, as did south Africa as England discovered in the semifinal. In skipper Laura Wolvaardt, the Proteas have a splendid batter and her two runs in the semifinal and final were high class and pugnacity. But the biggest takeaway is this—Indian women have found their place on cricket’s biggest stage The author is a columnist, social,KP activist &Freelancer. |
