| White collar terrorists turning to Telegram for secret communication | | Doctors, engineers among those using encrypted platform for terror activities | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 25: In a worrying trend, professional terror networks operating within India have increasingly turned to the encrypted messaging platform Telegram to stay in touch with each other and coordinate their activities, security officials have revealed. Investigators probing the recently busted “white-collar terror module”—comprising doctors and medical professionals—confirmed that its members were in constant communication with one another as well as with their handlers across the border through Telegram channels and private groups. These operatives allegedly used the platform’s secure features, disappearing messages, and anonymous handles to evade surveillance while planning logistics and recruitment. This is not the first instance of highly educated individuals exploiting Telegram for terror-related communication. In September 2023, security agencies cracked a sophisticated terror module of engineers who were also heavily dependent on Telegram for operational coordination. The module, led by Shahnawaz Alam, a mining engineer, was reportedly plotting attacks in multiple cities, including Ayodhya, before being intercepted. According to officials, the use of Telegram by such professional modules points to a shift in terror strategies, with educated operatives relying on advanced encryption to mask their digital footprints. Security agencies are now intensifying monitoring efforts and cyber surveillance to counter the growing misuse of encrypted communication platforms by radicalised individuals and organised terror outfits. |
