Self-employment is creating most new jobs in India: What this means for job seekers in the years to come

Self-employment has generated the majority of jobs across India’s economy over the past six years. The numbers jumped from 23.9 crore in FY18 to 35.8 crore in FY24, according to HSBC Bank’s Employment Trends in India report. This growth rate of 7 per cent annually positions self-employment as the fastest-expanding segment in India’s labour market, outpacing both salaried work and casual labour.
The shift marks a fundamental change in how Indians earn their living. Self-employed workers now represent well over half of India’s total employed population, which stands at 61.4 crore as of FY24. This expansion reflects both the opportunities available and the limitations within traditional employment structures, particularly as formal job creation struggles to match the pace of the expanding workforce.

Where are the jobs coming from?
Farm employment covers work in agriculture and related activities, including crop cultivation, livestock rearing, and forestry operations. Non-farm employment includes all other economic pursuits, spanning manufacturing units, construction sites, service industries, retail businesses, and various sectors beyond agriculture. Self-employment exists in both categories, whether someone runs their own agricultural land or operates a business in urban centres.
The employment structure is gradually shifting away from farm roles, though agriculture continues to add workers. Non-farm sectors accounted for 54 per cent of total employment as of FY24, whilst agriculture comprised 46 per cent, finds the HSBC report. Despite this overall transition towards non-farm activities, the agricultural sector expanded its workforce during this period, with women forming a substantial portion of new additions.
Selecting appropriate self-employment opportunitiesWhen selecting appropriate self-employment opportunities, one of the first factors to consider is skills. Individuals need to assess their existing abilities, knowledge, and experience to determine which self-employment options match their strengths. For example, someone with expertise in digital tools may find opportunities in content creation, online consulting, or e-commerce more suitable, while someone with hands-on technical skills may excel in repair services, manufacturing, or artisanal crafts. Understanding one’s core competencies helps reduce the risk of failure and increases the chances of sustained success.
Another important consideration is educational qualifications. Certain ventures, especially those in technical, financial, or consulting services, may require formal education or professional certifications. Qualifications can also influence credibility with customers and investors, which is particularly important in sectors such as tutoring, digital services, or specialised trades. Matching educational background with the chosen self-employment path ensures better market acceptance and smoother operations.
Startup capital is also a crucial factor. The initial investment needed varies widely depending on the nature of the business. Service-based ventures, such as freelancing, digital marketing, or online tutoring, usually require minimal capital, often limited to a computer and internet connection. In contrast, retail operations, manufacturing, and agriculture-based businesses demand higher initial outlays for equipment, inventory, or land. Evaluating available resources and funding options before starting a venture helps prevent cash flow issues and reduces financial stress.
An individual’s risk appetite significantly shapes the choice of self-employment. Some ventures, like trading in volatile markets or launching a new product, involve higher uncertainty, while others, such as established service offerings or franchised businesses, carry lower risk. Assessing one’s comfort with uncertainty and the ability to cope with setbacks allows aspiring entrepreneurs to choose a path that aligns with their temperament and long-term goals.
Finally, local market dynamics must be considered. Factors such as demand for products or services, competition, pricing trends, and customer behaviour in a specific area influence the viability of a business. Urban and rural markets differ in size, preferences, and purchasing power, so understanding the local context helps entrepreneurs select opportunities that are more likely to succeed. For example, handicrafts may thrive in tourist-heavy regions, while digital services may have a broader reach through online platforms.
Digital platforms have further expanded self-employment possibilities, allowing individuals to access wider markets without investing heavily in physical infrastructure. Technology enables ventures in online education, e-commerce, content creation, and consultancy, making location less restrictive. At the same time, traditional trades, local services, and artisanal businesses remain viable options in areas with established customer bases. Considering these factors—skills, education, capital, risk appetite, and local market conditions—provides a structured approach to selecting a self-employment path that is both sustainable and aligned with personal capabilities.
Opportunities students can explore independentlyStudents exploring self-employment can pursue a range of roles depending on their skills and interests. Freelancing in graphic design, content writing, web development, and digital marketing allows students to take on projects for clients or businesses. In these roles, students create visual assets, write blog posts or articles, develop websites, or manage online marketing campaigns. They need to build a portfolio, communicate with clients, and meet deadlines while continuously upgrading their technical skills.
Online tutoring and coaching offer another avenue, especially for academic subjects or competitive exam preparation. Students acting as tutors plan lessons, conduct classes online or offline, create study material, and track student progress. Strong subject knowledge, clear communication, and patience are essential for success in this area.
Social media management and content creation require students to handle a business’s online presence. Responsibilities include designing posts, creating videos, writing captions, scheduling content, analysing engagement metrics, and suggesting strategies to increase followers. Students need creativity, familiarity with social media platforms, and the ability to respond to audience interactions promptly.
In app development and software solutions, technically skilled students can develop mobile applications, software tools, or websites for businesses or personal projects. This involves coding, designing interfaces, testing functionality, and updating solutions based on user feedback. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and programming expertise are key requirements for success in this field.
Traditional businesses also remain relevant. In catering services, event management, and photography, students provide services directly to clients. This involves planning menus, managing events, taking professional-quality photographs, coordinating logistics, and delivering projects on schedule. Repair and maintenance services for electronics, vehicles, or appliances require technical know-how, diagnosing issues, sourcing parts, and fixing problems efficiently.
Rural or semi-urban students can explore agricultural entrepreneurship, such as organic farming, livestock management, or agro-processing. This work requires managing crops or products, understanding market demand, maintaining quality standards, and possibly marketing goods to nearby towns or online platforms.
Across all these roles, students benefit from skill development in areas like market research, financial planning, and customer relationship management. Access to mentorship and networking helps first-time entrepreneurs gain guidance, connect with potential clients, and navigate challenges effectively.
What the emerging employment mix means for future job seekersThis employment distribution shapes discussions around job creation, skill development programmes, and economic planning. The data indicates that supporting entrepreneurship and self-employment infrastructure holds importance alongside promoting traditional job creation in organised sectors. Access to credit facilities, training programmes, and market linkages becomes crucial for sustaining self-employment quality.
The report’s findings suggest that job seekers in coming years will likely encounter a labour market where self-employment opportunities continue expanding faster than traditional salaried positions. This pattern necessitates preparation for entrepreneurial ventures and development of skills suited to independent work arrangements. Educational institutions and training centres may need to incorporate entrepreneurship education and practical business skills into their curricula.
Financial institutions and government programmes supporting small-scale enterprises will play an increasingly important role. The availability of affordable credit, simplified regulatory procedures, and access to technology platforms can determine success rates for new self-employed individuals. Market conditions and economic policies will continue influencing whether self-employment represents a choice or a necessity for India’s growing workforce.
