| Cong disowns SC cell chairman; Bhagat hits back at Karra | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 11: A major controversy has erupted within the Jammu and Kashmir Congress after the Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) publicly disowned the party’s Scheduled Caste Department chairperson, Karan Bhagat, for organising an event attended by Congress Working Committee (CWC) member Vikar Rasool Wani and J&K SC Cell in-charge Tina Choudhary. Reacting sharply, Bhagat questioned the authority of JKPCC chief Tariq Hamid Karra to disown him. “Who is Tariq Hamid Karra to disown me?” Bhagat told The Early Times. “I have been appointed as SC Department chairperson by the All India Congress Committee (AICC). The Pradesh leadership has no authority to remove or disown me,” he asserted, accusing Karra of lacking understanding of Congress culture. “He is a product of the PDP,” Bhagat alleged. He further accused Karra of promoting “soft separatism” and damaging the party’s prospects across Jammu and Kashmir. Sources said Bhagat organised the function outside the PCC headquarters after being denied permission to hold it inside the party office. The event was presided over by former JKPCC president and Karra’s long-time rival, Vikar Rasool Wani. Minutes after the programme concluded, the party issued a statement disowning Bhagat. In an official handout, the JKPCC said it had taken “strong exception” to the “highly objectionable and unauthorized activities” of Bhagat, who it said stands disowned pending further disciplinary action for “gross indiscipline, anti-party activities, and levelling false, baseless and malicious allegations against the top leadership.” The party also claimed Bhagat’s bid for a ticket in the 2024 Assembly elections was rejected by the AICC on merit due to “serious complaints” about his conduct and reputation. Expressing concern over the participation of some leaders in the “unauthorized” event, the party noted that the post of SC Department chairman had fallen vacant after Bhagat’s “open resignation” through social media—resignation which, according to the party, was accompanied by “motivated and concocted allegations intended to tarnish the image of the organisation.” “He is notorious for foul language and undesirable activities,” JKPCC working president Raman Bhalla said, accusing Bhagat of misleading party workers to attend the unauthorised event. Bhalla added that the matter would be reported to the high command for action against those “encouraging indiscipline.” |
