| Infighting fears stall Cong’s district president appointments | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 17: Despite finalising the names of district presidents under the Congress party’s Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan, the leadership is yet to announce them amid fears that the move could trigger fresh infighting. Highly placed sources said all 21 AICC observers appointed for the party’s organisational districts in Jammu and Kashmir have completed the selection exercise. However, the leadership is deliberately delaying the announcement, apprehending that the declaration of names could open a “Pandora’s box” of factional disputes. The hesitation comes against the backdrop of protests and clashes that erupted soon after the launch of the organisational overhaul. What began as a routine exercise quickly turned turbulent, with rival groups clashing at the Congress headquarters on Residency Road in Jammu on November 26, followed by protests in several areas including Chhamb and Bishnah. As reported earlier by this newspaper, party workers have accused the leadership of “imposing” district-level leaders without adequate consultation, alleging that grassroots workers are being sidelined in favour of individuals close to senior leaders. Similar scenes of sloganeering and heated arguments were witnessed during meetings chaired by AICC observers in various districts. The Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan, launched under the direction of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge in consultation with J&K in-charge Syed Naseer Hussain, aims to rebuild the party’s organisational structure by appointing new district presidents. However, recurring disruptions have exposed deep factionalism within the Jammu unit. Party insiders said while more observers are expected to visit the Union Territory, the growing unrest has complicated the reform exercise, posing a serious challenge to the Congress leadership’s efforts to restore unity and discipline at the grassroots level. |
