Chandigarh University grapplers Deepanshu, Paras clinch Gold at All-India Inter-University Wrestling Greco-Roman, Freestyle Championship

MOHALI, Jan 8: The grapplers from over 200 universities across the country put on a spectacular display of strength, skill and endurance at the ongoing All-India Inter-University Wrestling Greco-Roman and Freestyle Championship 2025–26, being organized under the aegis of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and hosted by Chandigarh University.
The five-day-long national championship is witnessing the participation of over 2,700 wrestlers, with more than 1,500 bouts being contested across 20 weight categories in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling styles as the action continues amid biting cold on the fourth day at Chandigarh University campus on Thursday.
The prestigious national-level championship has brought together top wrestling talent from across India, with athletes delivering power-packed performances and showcasing exceptional athletic prowess in highly competitive bouts. On the inaugural day, Yogeshwar Dutt, Olympic Bronze Medalist, recipient of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Padma Shri and Arjuna Awardee graced the occasion as Chief Guest, Manjeet Chillar, professional Kabaddi player and Arjuna Awardee was Guest of Honour.
In a one-sided final bout, Deepanshu from Chandigarh University defeated Sachin of PU Chandigarh by 10-0 points to win gold in the 65 kg freestyle category. In the same weight category, Rohit from MDU Haryana defeated Adarsh from Bharati Vidyapeeth University Maharashtra by 11-0 points to win bronze medal.
In a nail-biting final bout, Paras from Chandigarh University defeated Ankit from MSBU Rajasthan by 11-8 points to clinch gold medal in 79 kg freestyle category. In the same weight category, Vijay from Singhania University and Amit from CBLU Haryana won their respective matches to win bronze medals.
In a one-sided contest, Kapil Dalal, a grappler from Chandigarh University defeated Sahil from BMU Haryana by 15-7 points to clinch the gold medal in the 60 kg Greco Roman category. Shubham Sharma from LPU Punjab and Abhishek Kumar from DRSPM Jharkhand had to suffice with bronze medals in their respective contests.
In another final match, Bindu from IP University got a walkover against his opponent Jaskaran from PU in the 97 kg Greco Roman category. In the same category, Nishant from University of Technology Jaipur defeated Vijaya from Karnataka University by 8-0 points and Sonu from Chandigarh University defeated Varun from Bagalkot University Karnataka by 10-0 points to win bronze medals.
Earlier, In 125 kg freestyle category, Chandigarh University’s grappler Lucky defeated Maruti Gowda of BU Karnataka by 10-0 points. In the quarter-final match, Lucky defeated Rohit of GUG, Haryana by a margin of 4-0. Later in his semi-final bout, Lucky, in a one-sided contest defeated Prashant from RMPS, UP by 6-0 points.
