Thannamandi, Jan 22: Govt. Degree College Thannamandi in a vibrant display of environmental consciousness and patriotic fervor organized a special plantation drive and Anti-Drug Awareness Program today within the college premises. The program was held under the patronage of the Principal, Dr. Shamim Ahmed Azad, by leading the initiative as a key part of the ongoing ‘Vande Mataram’ celebrations. The highlight of the drive was the ceremonial planting of Cedrus Deodara (Himalayan Cedar) saplings. Dr. Azad, accompanied by senior faculty members Dr Nazakat Hussain, Dr. Naseem Ahmed Malik, Dr. Ashaq Malik, Dr Sheraz Ahmed, Prof. Supriya Gupta, Prof. Fatima Parveen, Librarian Anuj Bali, Prof Rumy Dar, Prof. Rizwana Kouser and Dr Shazia Paswal along with the enthusiastic student volunteers, personally planted the saplings to symbolize the college’s commitment to a greener and more sustainable future. The choice of devdar (Cedrus Deodara,) a species deeply rooted in the Himalayan heritage, was phenomenal. During the event, Dr. Shamim Ahmed Azad addressed the gathering, emphasizing that "Vande Mataram" is not just a slogan but a call to serve the motherland, which includes protecting its natural resources by a Green Commitment. The event saw active collaborative participation from Nasha Mukht Bharat Abhiyan, College Beautification Committee specifically focusing on creating a student-nature bond while learning about the ecological importance of indigenous tree species. The drive concluded with a collective commitment and sense of national pride among staff and students to nurture our motherland, know our national heritage and uphold the values of environmental conservation as a national duty. The faculty members praised the Principal's leadership in integrating national celebrations with ecological action and Anti-drug Awareness, noting that such initiatives help in the holistic development of the students.
