| KVK, Reasi promotes value addition in spices | | | Early Times Report REASI, Jan 22: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the aegis of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu promoting and educating rural women on value addition in spices.KVK Reasi is working under the dynamic leadership of Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, Prof.B.N. Tripathi and able guidance of Director Extension, Prof.Amrish Vaid of SKUAST-Jammu. Dr. Banarsi Lal, Chief Scientist &Head of KVK Reasi said that by the value addition of spices such as turmeric, ginger, garlic etc. rural women can fetch more returns and generate extra income and employment. He elaborated the significance of value addition in spices to enhance the income and employment of rural women of hilly areas. He guided the participants for the processing of spices by which they can generate more money.He further said both turmeric and ginger are viable alternative crops in monkeys' prone areas and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi scientists are technically guiding the farmers and encouraging them for the commercial cultivation of organic turmeric and ginger so that chemicals free turmeric and ginger can be produced. He stressed on Self Help Groups (SHGs)/Farmers Producer Company (FPOs) formation and added that the farmers should jointly work for the entrepreneurship in the processed products of spices. He encouraged the participants for entrepreneurship development in spices and motivated them to strengthen the processing unit. He also guided the participants on dehydration process, FSSAI, packaging, labeling and branding of the processed products of spices. He narrated that the value addition in spices has an immense scope in hilly areas. He guided the participants on the scientific techniques in the value addition of spices. He spoke on the preparation of ginger candy, ginger pickle, ginger powder, garlic paste etc. by elaborating their scientific preparation. An awardee woman farmer, Anita Kumari also shared her experiences on processing of spices with other rural women. By observing the results of successful rural women many new rural women are showing keen interest towards the value addition in spices. |
