The Department of History held a visit to the Natural History Museum and the Government Museum annd Art Gallery, Sector 10, Chandigarh. The visit focused on structured, object-based learning, enabling students to engage directly with material culture from Prehistory to the Medieval period. The session was conducted by heritage walk leaders and budding archaeologists Ms. Himani Chopra and Mr. Harnoordeep Vats, who guided students through curated galleries with focused discussions on chronology, materiality, and historical context. Students examined Stone Age tools to understand early human settlements, adaptation patterns, subsistence strategies, and tool-making techniques. Supervised hands-on engagement with select Harappan and early historic artefacts offered insights into social life, belief systems, trade networks, and artistic traditions, with emphasis on iconography and inscriptions. Guided touch sessions with sculptural pieces illuminated medieval craftsmanship, while miniature paintings were analysed for themes, composition, and socio-cultural references, highlighting reflections of courtly culture and everyday life. In another visit, Foreign Students' Cell and the Postgraduate Department of Sociology took students to Divya Kala Mela, Chandigarh, an initiative of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in collaboration with the Chandigarh Administration. The mela showcased handicrafts, textiles, decorative items, and handmade products created by specially-abled artisans from across India. Through direct interaction, students learned about the artisans' journeys, challenges, and achievements, gaining insight into sociological concepts such as marginalisation, inclusion, and empowerment. The event highlighted how economic opportunities foster self-reliance, dignity of labour, and social recognition, presenting artisans as confident entrepreneurs actively participating in mainstream economic life. The visit strengthened academic understanding of empowerment and inclusion while fostering awareness of equal opportunities and social justice. Officiating Principal Ms. Neena Sharma appreciated the initiatives, noting that such experiential learning opportunities play a vital role in nurturing socially responsible and academically aware students. |
