Early Times Report
Chandigarh, Feb 28: Excessive use of digital screens is gradually weakening eyesight. The growing use of mobile phones, computers, laptops, and television has led to increased complaints of eye strain and headaches among children, youth, elderly people, and women. At the National Institute of Ayurveda (NIA), Panchkula, Ayurvedic treatment methods for declining vision are proving beneficial. Under the guidance of Vice-Chancellor Professor (Dr.) Sanjeev Sharma and Dean Professor Gulab Chand Pamnani, and under the aegis of the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, the Shalakya Tantra Department is treating patients through various therapeutic methods. These include eye exercises, Triphala decoction (Triphala Kwath), Netra Parisheka (eye irrigation), and Netra Tarpana, all of which are considered effective Ayurvedic procedures. The increasing influence of social media is affecting the eyesight of people across all age groups. Eye exercises are particularly helpful in reducing fatigue caused by excessive digital screen use. They strengthen the eye muscles, and it is recommended to practice them for 5–10 minutes daily. Dr. Garima Gupta from the Shalakya Tantra Department stated that more than 50 patients visit the OPD daily for consultation and treatment. After examining their vision condition, the treatment process is initiated. Additionally, eye disorders are steadily increasing among elderly patients suffering from diabetes and hypertension, including cases of diabetic retinopathy and hypertensive retinopathy. Eye Washing with Triphala Decoction Dr. Gupta further explained that washing the eyes with Triphala decoction helps strengthen the eye muscles. This method provides relief from irritation, grittiness, watery eyes, blurred vision, and redness. Netra Tarpana is also considered beneficial in improving eyesight. 20-20-20 Rule Also Effective The 20-20-20 rule is also effective in improving eye health, especially for those who work long hours on computers. After every 20 minutes of screen time, one should take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away, blinking 5–6 times during the break. This practice helps reduce headaches, eye strain, and dryness. It is advisable to blink every five seconds and change activities whenever eye strain is felt. |
