MCM marks National Science Day

Chandigarh, Mar 1: Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women commemorated National Science Day with a series of engaging, multidisciplinary activities organised by the Departments of Botany, Zoology, and Chemistry under the aegis of MCM Vigyan Manch and Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC). The events collectively highlighted scientific temper, creativity, innovation, and the pivotal role of women in building a Viksit Bharat.
The Department of Botany organised Department of Science and Technology-Renewable Energy (DST-RE) sponsored inter-college competitions-Pebble Painting and Caption the Picture. The theme for Pebble Painting-‘Floral Diversity’ and for Caption the Picture- ‘Women in Science Catalysing Viksit Bharat’, inspired participants to merge creativity with scientific insight. More than 75 students from tri-city institutions participated enthusiastically. Judges evaluated entries on originality, thematic relevance, presentation, and overall impact, applauding the innovative ideas and vibrant artistic expressions. To further promote scientific temper and data visualisation skills, the Departments of Botany and Zoology organised an Infographic Competition on the theme ‘Women in Science: Catalysing Viksit Bharat’. Over 40 students created compelling visual narratives using digital tools, transforming complex scientific ideas into clear and impactful representations. Entries were assessed on scientific accuracy, clarity, originality, and presentation, with winners recognised for their analytical and creative excellence. The Postgraduate Department of Chemistry organised a Lecture-cum-Workshop and Basic Chemistry Experiment Competition to highlight the importance of science and technology in everyday life. Students demonstrated practical skills through live Chemistry experiments showcasing real-life applications, reinforcing that science is not merely a subject but a way of thinking. The programme featured an insightful lecture by Prof. Ashish Pal, Scientist-G, INST Mohali, on ‘Nanoscience as an Emerging Area to Tackle Global Challenges’. He discussed the fundamentals of nanoscience and its global relevance in developing smart and sustainable solutions across healthcare, traditional medicine systems, energy, environment, food security, and disease control.
Officiating Principal Ms. Neena Sharma applauded the organisers for conducting meaningful activities that underscore the relevance of science and innovation in daily life and inspire students to pursue scientific inquiry for national development. She added that the celebrations successfully reinforced the spirit of National Science Day by nurturing curiosity, innovation, and a deeper appreciation of science as a driving force for sustainable development and nation-building.
