JAMMU, Mar 16: The Road Safety Club of GGM Science College, Jammu, organised an awareness lecture on Road Safety and Traffic Rules in the Conference Hall of the college to sensitise students and faculty members about responsible commuting and the importance of traffic discipline. The programme aimed to create awareness about safe driving practices, adherence to traffic regulations and the collective responsibility of citizens in preventing road accidents. The event was coordinated by members of the Road Safety Club as part of the institution's ongoing efforts to promote civic responsibility among students.
The formal proceedings commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Asha Sharmhal, who underlined the growing need for awareness regarding road safety, particularly among young drivers, and highlighted the role educational institutions play in shaping responsible citizens. The keynote session was delivered by resource persons from Traffic Police Jammu, Ashwani Sharma, DySP Traffic Police, and Inspector Sunil Singh, who shared practical insights on traffic management, road accident prevention and the importance of following safety measures such as wearing helmets, using seat belts and avoiding mobile phone usage while driving. Ashwani Sharma elaborated on common causes of road accidents, legal provisions under traffic laws and the role of youth in fostering a culture of disciplined driving. He urged students to strictly follow traffic norms and act as responsible road users to reduce accident rates and save lives.
Addressing the gathering, the Principal of the college, Dr. Romesh Gupta, emphasised that road safety is not merely a legal obligation but a social responsibility. He encouraged students to become ambassadors of awareness within their families and communities and stressed that small acts of responsibility on roads can significantly contribute to public safety. As a mark of appreciation, planters were presented to the guests by the Principal.
Nearly 100 students actively participated in the programme, which was attended by faculty members including Dr. Devinder Kumar Sharma (ANO, NCC), Dr. Arti Heer, Dr. Shalini Sharma, Dr. Pankaj Gupta, Dr. Altaf Ahmed and Dr. Vandana Khajuria.
