Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Mar 16: The Social Welfare departmen organized a mega special awareness programme for senior citizens at Kashmir Haat srinagar under the Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana. The programme aimed to create awareness among senior citizens about various government welfare schemes, pension benefits, healthcare services, and other support facilities available for the elderly. Renowned social reformer, historian and noted poet Zareef Ahmad Zareef was the Chief Guest on the occasion, while Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad served as the Guest of Honour. On the occasion, several senior citizens were felicitated by the Social Welfare Department for their outstanding social contributions and services to the community, particularly for helping the poor and supporting social causes. The awardees included Zareef Ahmad Zareef, Mrs. Ruksana Jan, Abdul Ganie Parray, Ghulam Qadir Bhat, Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen, Ghulam Qadir Dar, Mushtaq Ahmed Shah (Mehram) and Mrs. Rahat Bibi. Speaking on the occasion, Zareef Ahmad Zareef highlighted the important status of senior citizens in society, stating that they are the pillars of the nation. He said that senior citizens are a treasure trove of experience and knowledge and emphasized that the younger generation should learn from their wisdom and life experiences. In his address, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad (JKAS) welcomed the dignitaries, guests, and senior citizens present at the event. He highlighted various welfare schemes implemented by the Social Welfare Department for the benefit of elderly citizens. He also urged senior citizens to visit Ahata Waqar, a Day Care and Recreational Centre for senior citizens at Chanapora, and avail the facilities provided there by the department. An informative session was conducted by Ms. Nazia Wani, Tehsil Social Welfare Officer, Srinagar South, who elaborated on various social welfare schemes available for senior citizens and explained the procedures for availing these benefits. A meaningful and engaging skit was also presented during the programme, highlighting the social issues and challenges faced by senior citizens, including neglect and abuse. The performance effectively conveyed the message of respect, care, and protection for the elderly. Dr. Saqiba, a geriatric specialist associated with Ahata Waqar, delivered a talk on common health conditions affecting senior citizens and emphasized the importance of regular medical check-ups and a healthy lifestyle. Legal awareness was provided by Ms. Zainab, Lawyer at the One Stop Centre Srinagar, who explained the legal rights and protections available to senior citizens. Speaking on the occasion, Reyaz Ahmad, Financial Literacy Counsellor at Jammu & Kashmir Bank, informed the participants about safe financial practices and banking services designed specifically for senior citizens. A session on physical wellness and healthy ageing was conducted by Yoga Instructor Mr. Younis, who demonstrated simple exercises and explained the importance of regular physical activity for maintaining fitness and well-being in old age. The programme concluded with appreciation for the efforts of the Social Welfare Department in organizing such awareness initiatives aimed at improving the well-being, dignity, and quality of life of senior citizens in the community. |
