| Row may end as Pol Science Dept recommends dropping Jinnah, Iqbal, Sir Syed from syllabus | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 22: The controversy surrounding the inclusion of Muhammad Ali Jinnah in the postgraduate political science syllabus at University of Jammu is likely to subside, with the department recommending the removal of the contentious content. In a significant move, the Postgraduate Department of Political Science has decided to drop not only Jinnah but also topics related to Syed Ahmad Khan and Muhammad Iqbal from the curriculum. According to an official handout, the Faculty/Departmental Affairs Committee (DAC), which met on March 22, deliberated on concerns regarding the syllabi of the one-year and two-year M.A. Political Science programmes in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. After detailed discussions, the committee unanimously resolved to recommend the removal of topics related to these figures from specific course papers—PIPSTC 102 (one-year programme) and P2PSTC 302 (two-year programme). The proposal has been forwarded to the Board of Studies (BoS), which is scheduled to meet on March 24 via online mode to take a final call on the matter. The development comes in the wake of protests by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), which had objected to the inclusion of a chapter on Jinnah in the revised syllabus for the 2026–2028 academic session. The syllabus had placed Jinnah under the ‘Modern Indian Political Thought’ module in a paper titled ‘Minorities and the Nation’. Amid the growing row, the university administration had earlier constituted a high-level committee to review the issue. The panel, headed by Prof. Naresh Padha, includes heads of the departments of philosophy, history, and sociology, along with the Director of DSRS, while the Assistant Registrar (Academic Affairs) serves as Member Secretary. The committee has been tasked with examining the concerns and submitting its report at the earliest. Protests intensified on campus on Friday, led by ABVP Jammu and Kashmir secretary Sannak Shrivats. Demonstrators raised slogans against the university administration and demanded immediate withdrawal of the chapter, terming its inclusion “unacceptable.” The organisation also warned of a wider agitation across Jammu and Kashmir if the decision was not reversed. With the department now recommending the removal of the controversial topics, a final decision by the Board of Studies is awaited, which is expected to bring closure to the issue. |
