Jammu, Apr 1: The involvement of police personnel in narco-terror networks has once again come under focus after Udhampur Police on Wednesday dismissed a constable for his alleged role in a narcotics case. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Udhampur ordered the dismissal of Constable Arjun Sharma (No. 886/U) with immediate effect following a departmental inquiry into FIR No. 170/2025 registered under the NDPS Act at Police Station Rehmbal. According to officials, the constable was apprehended during a naka checking operation by a team from Police Post Tikri in Udhampur district. Heroin was recovered from his possession, which was later confirmed by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL). “The misconduct was grave and unbecoming of a police official. After due process, including issuance of a show-cause notice, the reply submitted by the accused was found unsatisfactory,” officials said, adding that the dismissal was carried out under Rule 359 of the J&K Police Rules. The incident has once again highlighted concerns over the alleged nexus between some rogue police personnel and drug trafficking networks, often described as part of the broader “narco-terror” ecosystem. Authorities have, in recent years, intensified crackdowns to cleanse the force, with nearly a dozen police personnel terminated for involvement in such activities. In a similar case last year, an SPO posted at District Police Lines (DPL) Poonch was arrested along with an associate by Jammu Police under Operation Sanjeevani. The duo was intercepted near Miran Sahib while travelling on the Ring Road, and heroin was recovered from their vehicle. A case under relevant sections of the NDPS Act was registered, and investigations are ongoing. Crackdowns have continued in multiple cases. In November 2024, two separate incidents in Jammu city led to the arrest of police personnel for alleged involvement in drug trafficking. On November 7, 2024 a constable posted in the Crime Branch was arrested along with his two wives for allegedly running a narcotics distribution network across Jammu province. Police recovered ganja, charas, cash, mobile phones, and packaging material used for heroin distribution from his residence. On November 12, 2024 another constable was arrested for allegedly operating a drug racket within the premises of Government Medical College, Jammu. Officials said he was part of a larger syndicate targeting local youth for profit and was subsequently placed under suspension. Earlier, in August 2025, five police personnel were terminated from service for their involvement in drug trafficking, underscoring the administration’s zero-tolerance policy against narco-terror activities within the ranks. Officials reiterated that strict action will continue against any personnel found complicit in such illegal activities, as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle the narco-terror network in the region. |
