| First Line Of Defence | | | Border villages in the country are the first line of defence. Residents of these villages have always exhibited exemplary courage to thwart nefarious designs of the adversary. They have remained steadfast in their resolve to support the security forces and maintain tight vigil. People of the border villages act as eyes, ears and nose of the security forces. Recently, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, visited the vibrant border village of Makwal in Jammu. He praised the residents for their courage, sacrifice and patience and told them that they stand first in the priorities of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. LG Sinha assured them that services rendered by them will be honoured not only in words, but reflected clearly in the quality of life of every family. Pertinently, after taking over as the Prime Minister in 2014, PM Modi laid special emphasis on ensuring that development in border areas goes hand in hand with security considerations. During the past one decade these villages have witnessed improved road connectivity, better healthcare facilities, reliable electricity, access to quality education, and digital connectivity. These measures have not only uplifted living standards but have also strengthened the strategic depth of the nation by ensuring that people continue to inhabit and safeguard these sensitive regions. In addition to the steps, the government needs to institutionalize mechanisms that recognize and reward the contributions of border residents. Whether through special welfare schemes, insurance coverage, or employment opportunities, the state must ensure that the sacrifices made by these communities are duly acknowledged and compensated. Their integration into local security frameworks through community policing initiatives can further enhance coordination and trust between civilians and security forces. At a time when the nature of threats is evolving, the importance of human intelligence and local vigilance cannot be overstated. Technology may augment surveillance, but it cannot replace the instinctive awareness and ground-level insights of people who have lived in these regions for generations. In essence, safeguarding the nation’s borders is not solely the responsibility of the armed forces; it is a collective effort in which border residents play a pivotal role. Honouring their service must be reflected in policies that ensure dignity, security, and prosperity for every family living on the nation’s frontlines. |
