Jammu, Apr 9: The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday dismissed a woman constable from service for her established involvement in drug trafficking, marking the second such termination within nine days as authorities intensify efforts to purge the force of personnel linked to the narco-terror network. The dismissed employee, Shameema Bano, served as a follower in the police department at Baramulla district in north Kashmir. She had been placed under suspension as far back as June 2021 following her arrest by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Jammu, in a case registered under the NDPS Act involving seizure of contraband. After completion of departmental proceedings and due process, SSP Baramulla issued the formal dismissal order on April 8, 2026, under the relevant provisions of J&K Police Rules. Her termination comes barely a week after SSP Udhampur ordered the dismissal of Constable Arjun Sharma (No. 886/U) on April 1, following a departmental inquiry into an NDPS Act case. Sharma had been caught during a naka checking operation by a Police Post Tikri team, with heroin recovered from his possession and subsequently confirmed by the Forensic Science Laboratory. Officials noted that his show-cause reply was found unsatisfactory, and he was dismissed under Rule 359 of the J&K Police Rules. The back-to-back dismissals have renewed concerns over the alleged nexus between rogue police personnel and drug trafficking networks — a phenomenon authorities describe as integral to the broader narco-terror ecosystem in the region. In August 2025, five police personnel were simultaneously terminated for similar offences, while a series of arrests through late 2024 exposed officers allegedly running narcotics distribution networks across Jammu province, including one constable operating a drug racket within the premises of Government Medical College, Jammu. Officials have reiterated that zero tolerance will be maintained against any personnel found complicit in such activities, as the administration presses ahead with its campaign to make Jammu and Kashmir drug-free. |
