Early Times Report
UDHAMPUR, Apr 11: Even a brief spell of rain has exposed serious drainage issues across multiple areas of Udhampur, including the main bazaar and some other localities within municipal limits, as roads were seen turning into waterlogged stretches resembling small streams. Local residents and shopkeepers expressed concern over the recurring problem, stating that even minimal rainfall leads to accumulation of water on the streets. The primary reason behind the situation is said to be blocked and poorly maintained drainage systems, which fail to carry rainwater efficiently.
The situation worsened as water entered residential areas in some parts of the town, with some houses reportedly affected. People were seen struggling to move out of their homes as water filled lanes and entered courtyards.
Expressing her distress, a local woman said, "Just 30 minutes of rain caused this situation. Our entire street got filled with water, and it even entered our homes." Her statement reflects the growing frustration among residents facing repeated waterlogging issues.
The condition has not only disrupted normal movement of pedestrians and vehicles but has also raised serious concerns about sanitation and civic management. People fear that stagnant water may lead to foul smell, mosquito breeding, and damage to roads and nearby properties.
Residents have urged the Udhampur Municipal Council to take immediate steps to clean and maintain the drains on a regular basis. They emphasized that timely desilting and proper drainage planning are essential to prevent such situations, especially during the rainy season.
Locals warn that if authorities fail to act promptly, the problem may worsen in the coming days, causing inconvenience to the public and affecting daily life and business activities across the town.
The incident highlights the urgent need for improved urban infrastructure and proactive measures to ensure that even light rainfall does not turn into a major civic issue.
