Kathua, May 16: In a major enforcement drive aimed at ensuring road safety and strict compliance with traffic regulations, the Motor Vehicle Department Kathua on Saturday conducted a special checking campaign across various routes and key locations of the district. During the drive, action was taken against motorists found violating traffic norms, and hefty fines were imposed on offenders. Under the Direction of the Transport Commissioner, the Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Kathua, a enforcement team was constituted under the supervision of ARTO Shammi Kumar. The team included MVI Vikas Shrivats, MVI Jatinder Chib and other officials of the department. Extensive checking of vehicles was carried out at different locations across Kathua district. Officials said action was taken against drivers found without valid documents, riding without helmets, overloading vehicles, not wearing seat belts and violating other provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. The department stated that the drive was organised to strengthen road safety measures and create awareness among the public regarding adherence to traffic rules. During the campaign, a total of 298 vehicles were checked, out of which 147 were challaned for various violations. Four vehicles were seized for serious offences, while 10 driving licences were recommended for suspension. A total fine amounting to Rs 4.15 lakh was imposed during the enforcement drive. Speaking on the occasion, ARTO Shammi Kumar said the department’s objective was not merely to issue challans but also to educate people about the importance of following traffic rules. He appealed to motorists to carry all necessary documents, follow speed limits and use safety gear while driving to help reduce road accidents. He further said that similar enforcement drives would continue in the coming days and strict action would be taken against violators to ensure safer and more disciplined traffic management in the district. |
