Jammu, June 22: The stark contrast in governance, development, and public welfare between the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) has once again come into focus as fresh protests, strikes, and demonstrations continue to rock the region across the Line of Control (LoC). While Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed significant improvements in infrastructure, healthcare, education, connectivity, and welfare delivery over the past several years, PoJK continues to grapple with recurring public unrest over economic hardship, inflation, governance issues, and lack of adequate public services. Recent protests across various parts of PoJK have seen traders, transporters, students, lawyers, and civil society groups taking to the streets to voice their concerns over rising electricity tariffs, withdrawal of subsidies, unemployment, inflation, and what they describe as inadequate political representation and administrative accountability. The demonstrations, which have periodically disrupted normal life in the region, have also led to clashes between protesters and security forces, resulting in casualties, injuries, arrests, and restrictions on internet services, further highlighting growing public discontent. Observers point out that unlike political narratives often associated with the Kashmir issue, many of the demands being raised by protesters in PoJK are linked to day-to-day concerns of ordinary citizens, including affordable electricity, access to subsidised food, employment opportunities, better infrastructure, and responsive governance. In contrast, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed extensive investments in infrastructure and public welfare programmes in recent years. Improved road networks, enhanced healthcare facilities, expanded educational opportunities, and increased connectivity have contributed to economic activity across the Union Territory. The tourism sector, one of the key pillars of Jammu and Kashmir's economy, has emerged as a major source of livelihood for thousands of families. Houseboat owner "Recent protests across various parts of PoJK have seen traders, transporters, students, lawyers, and civil society groups taking to the streets to voice their concerns over rising electricity tariffs, withdrawal of subsidies, unemployment, inflation, and what they describe as inadequate political representation and administrative accountability." , hoteliers, taxi operators, artisans, shopkeepers, and tourism-related workers have benefited from the steady influx of visitors, generating employment and supporting local businesses. Educational opportunities have also expanded with the establishment of new institutions and improved access to higher education, enabling students to pursue professional careers and broaden their employment prospects. Analysts note that the differing trajectories of the two regions underscore the critical role of governance and public welfare in shaping public satisfaction. They argue that citizens tend to judge administrations not by political slogans or official statements, but by their ability to provide quality education, healthcare, employment opportunities, social security, and essential public services. The ongoing unrest in PoJK, they say, reflects growing frustration among sections of the population over economic challenges and governance-related concerns, while the developmental initiatives undertaken in Jammu and Kashmir have contributed to improved living standards and economic opportunities for many residents. Experts further point out that good governance has historically been linked to social stability, economic growth, and public trust. Access to schools, healthcare facilities, employment opportunities, and transparent administration often helps strengthen confidence in institutions and reduces public grievances. The developments on both sides of the Line of Control have once again highlighted how governance, economic opportunity, and delivery of public services remain central to the aspirations of ordinary people, irrespective of political or geographical boundaries. As protests continue in PoJK over issues ranging from inflation and utility costs to governance and representation, the contrast with the ongoing developmental initiatives in Jammu and Kashmir is increasingly being cited as an example of how investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and welfare can directly influence the quality of life of citizens and contribute to long-term social and economic stability. |
