| OBC delegation led by Dr Rohit Gupta meets Div Comm Jammu, seeks immediate redressal of long-pending issues | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 3: A deputation of the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community, led by senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Dr. Rohit Gupta, today called on the Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, and apprised him of several long-pending and pressing issues confronting the OBC community in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The delegation submitted a comprehensive memorandum seeking urgent intervention for the resolution of various issues affecting thousands of OBC families. Dr. Gupta informed the Divisional Commissioner that despite constitutional safeguards and reservation provisions, several genuine concerns of the OBC community continue to remain unattended, depriving deserving beneficiaries of their legitimate rights. One of the major issues highlighted was the continued existence of the "Rural Only" tag against four OBC castes-Barbers, Teelis, Potters (Kumahars) and Washermen-in the Central OBC list. The deputation pointed out that the Jammu and Kashmir Government had already recommended the removal of these anomalies to the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, but the matter is still awaiting final approval, causing hardship to eligible candidates from urban areas in availing Central Government reservation benefits. The delegation also raised concerns regarding the mandatory requirement of submitting a current income certificate while applying for OBC certificates. It urged the administration to ensure adherence to the prescribed rule of considering the average income of the previous three years, thereby preventing unnecessary inconvenience to applicants. Dr. Gupta further stressed the need for adequate representation of OBC members in important constitutional and recruitment bodies, including the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC) and the Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board (JKSSB), to ensure inclusive and equitable representation in the decision-making process. The deputation also demanded the immediate operationalisation of the Dogri Department at the Central University of Jammu, stating that despite receiving approval, the department has not yet been made functional, depriving students of higher educational opportunities in the region's mother tongue. Another significant demand raised was the inclusion of a separate OBC column in the ongoing Census, which the delegation said is essential for collecting accurate demographic data and formulating effective welfare policies for the backward classes. Speaking after the meeting, Dr. Rohit Gupta said the OBC community has been patiently awaiting justice on several legitimate demands for years. He expressed hope that the administration would take up these matters with the appropriate authorities and ensure their expeditious resolution. The Divisional Commissioner gave a patient hearing to the deputation and assured them that the issues raised would be examined sympathetically and forwarded to the concerned authorities for appropriate action. The members of the delegation thanked the Divisional Commissioner for his positive response and reiterated their commitment to continue pursuing the genuine rights and welfare of the OBC community through democratic and constitutional means. |
