| Govt orders statewide re-verification of school library books | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 6: In the wake of the controversy surrounding the book “Personalities and Legends of J&K”, the Directorate of Samagra Shiksha, Jammu and Kashmir, has reconstituted committees for a comprehensive re-verification of books supplied by various publishers to government schools under the Library Component for the 2025–26 academic session. According to an order, the decision has been taken in pursuance of Government Order No. 257-JK(Edu) of 2026 and follows the disbanding of the earlier verification committees amid allegations regarding objectionable content in certain books. Separate 10-member committees have been constituted for the Jammu and Kashmir divisions. The committees comprise Coordinators of Samagra Shiksha along with officers to be deputed by the Directors of School Education, Jammu and Kashmir, and the Director of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), J&K. The order directs the committees to conduct a fresh and thorough scrutiny of the contents of all books supplied by various publishers and ensure that no objectionable material is included in them. "The committee will reverify the content and ensure that not a single objectionable word lies in these books," the order states. The Directorate has also withheld payments to publishers until the committees certify the authenticity and appropriateness of the content. The order makes it clear that no payment will be released unless the committees authenticate the books and confirm that their contents meet the prescribed standards. The committees have been tasked with ensuring that the books supplied to government schools promote constitutional values, national integration, scientific temper, and balanced historical perspectives. Besides examining books at the divisional level, the committees will also conduct random verification of books supplied to districts across Jammu and Kashmir. They have been directed to submit their reports within 30 days. The move comes days after the Jammu and Kashmir Government banned the controversial book Personalities and Legends of J&K, which allegedly glorified terrorists and separatist leaders and contained content that officials claimed was reproduced from Pakistani propaganda material. Following the controversy, several officials were suspended, an FIR was registered, and multiple agencies launched investigations into the procurement and approval of the book for government school libraries under the Samagra Shiksha programme. |
