| ‘Watch & Earn’ apps could empty your bank account, police warn | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, July 25: Jammu and Kashmir Police has cautioned people against falling prey to fraudulent “Watch & Earn” and “Easy Money” mobile applications, warning that cyber criminals are using such apps to steal personal and financial information and carry out fraudulent transactions.
In a cybercrime awareness alert, the police said apps claiming to offer quick earnings for watching reels or videos may not always be genuine and could be designed to compromise users’ devices and sensitive information.
According to the police, such applications may seek unnecessary permissions after installation and could also trigger the download of malicious APK files, potentially giving cyber criminals unauthorised access to users’ devices.
The police warned that scammers could use these apps to gain access to devices, steal banking credentials and personal data, and initiate fraudulent financial transactions.
J&K Police advised citizens not to immediately trust applications promising “easy money” or quick earnings and urged them to avoid downloading APK files through unknown pop-ups or unauthorised links.
People have also been advised to carefully check app permissions before installation and exercise extreme caution while granting access to their screens, SMS messages, banking information or accessibility features.
The police further cautioned citizens against installing applications solely on the basis of fake reviews or advertisements circulated through social media platforms.
“Watch & Earn” applications promising easy income should be treated with suspicion, the police said, urging people to remain extra vigilant while downloading or using such apps.
The police advised victims of cyber fraud to report incidents immediately by calling the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or by filing a complaint through the official National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. |
