Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital performs region's first endoscopic spine surgery
7/31/2026 10:39:39 PM
Early Times Report
KATRA, July 31: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Kakryal-Katra, has successfully performed its first endoscopic spine surgery, marking a significant advancement in minimally invasive spine care in the region. The procedure was performed on a young male patient suffering from a severely extruded spinal disc that had caused debilitating pain and restricted his daily activities. The surgery was led by Dr. Khushwant Singh, Consultant - Neurosurgery, with anaesthesia support provided by Dr. Sumit Bloria, Senior Consultant - Neuro Anaesthesia.
Using an advanced endoscopic technique, the surgical team removed the extruded disc through a small incision while preserving the surrounding muscles and healthy tissue. The patient experienced significant pain relief, recovered satisfactorily and was discharged in stable condition the very next day.
Speaking about the procedure, Dr. Khushwant Singh said, "Endoscopic spine surgery allows us to access the affected area with precision while minimising damage to healthy tissue. Compared to conventional open surgery, patients experience less post-operative pain, minimal blood loss, a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery."
Dr. Sumit Bloria said, "The minimally invasive nature of the procedure reduces surgical trauma and physiological stress on the patient. It also enables faster recovery from anaesthesia, early mobilisation and a more comfortable post-operative experience."
Commenting on the achievement, Dr. Yashpal Sharma, Executive Director, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence, said, "The successful introduction of endoscopic spine surgery reflects the continued advancement of specialised neurological services at our hospital. With the vision and continued support of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, we are strengthening advanced healthcare infrastructure and ensuring that patients from Jammu & Kashmir and neighbouring regions can access modern treatment closer to home."
Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital is a comprehensive trauma-ready facility, supported by a 24×7 Emergency Department, dedicated Neuro ICU, advanced Neuro Operation Theatre, modern imaging facilities and round-the-clock critical-care and surgical support.
The achievement further strengthens the hospital's position as a leading centre for comprehensive brain and spine care and reflects the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board's commitment to making advanced, accessible and timely healthcare available to the people of Jammu & Kashmir.
