Farmers Welfare National Priority
7/31/2026 10:57:56 PM
In a farmer friendly decision, the Centre has extended the PM-KISAN scheme for the next five years till 2030-31 with a total outlay of over Rs 3.15 lakh crore.
This scheme was launched in February 2019 to provide eligible landholding farmer families with financial assistance of Rs 6,000 per year. The amount is transferred directly into their bank accounts in three equal instalments. Nearly 4.5 lakh crore have been disbursed so far under this scheme.
The decision reflects continuity in policy and reinforces the government’s commitment to ensuring financial security for millions of farming families. At a time when agriculture continues to face challenges ranging from climate change and fluctuating market prices to rising input costs, the extension of this flagship scheme comes as a reassuring measure for India’s farmers.
The importance of PM-KISAN goes beyond the monetary value of Rs 6,000. For many small and marginal farmers, this amount serves as timely support during crucial agricultural operations such as purchasing seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, or meeting other cultivation-related expenses. It also helps ease the burden of household expenditures, especially during difficult seasons or crop failures. While the amount may not meet all farming expenses, it acts as a dependable financial cushion that enables farmers to plan their agricultural activities with greater confidence. The extension of the scheme demonstrates that the government recognizes agriculture as the backbone of the Indian economy. Despite rapid industrialization and the expansion of the services sector, millions of Indians continue to depend on farming for their livelihood. Ensuring their economic stability is essential not only for rural prosperity but also for national food security. A financially secure farmer is better equipped to invest in improved agricultural practices, adopt modern technology, and enhance productivity. Equally noteworthy is the transparent implementation of the scheme through digital platforms. The success of PM-KISAN has showcased how technology can improve governance by ensuring accountability and efficiency in welfare delivery. The widespread adoption of Aadhaar-linked bank accounts and digital verification has minimized duplication and strengthened public confidence in government programmes. The government’s decision to continue PM-KISAN till 2030-31 sends a clear message that the welfare of farmers remains a national priority.
By sustaining direct financial assistance while simultaneously pursuing long-term agricultural reforms, India can build a stronger, more resilient farming sector. The extension is not merely a fiscal commitment; it is an investment in the nation’s food security, rural economy, and the dignity of millions of farmers who continue to feed the country.
