Jammu, Aug 2: With incidents of cyber-enabled matrimonial fraud on the rise, the Jammu and Kashmir Police has issued a public advisory urging people to exercise caution and thoroughly verify online matrimonial profiles before entering into any relationship or financial transaction.
In the advisory, the police asked users of matrimonial websites and social media platforms to verify the authenticity of profile photographs by using Google Reverse Image Search to check whether the images have been copied from other sources.
People have also been advised to ensure that prospective matches have genuine social media accounts on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, instead of relying solely on matrimonial profiles. The police said users should look beyond the number of followers and examine whether the profiles have real friends, genuine comments, tagged photographs and a consistent posting history.
The advisory further urged individuals to seek and independently verify official identity and employment documents before proceeding with marriage discussions.
Warning against online financial fraud, the police cautioned citizens never to transfer money based on emotional appeals, medical emergencies or unverifiable claims, even if the matrimonial profile appears genuine.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police also appealed to victims of cyber fraud to report such incidents without delay by calling the National Cyber Crime Helpline 1930 or lodging a complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
The advisory is part of the police's ongoing cyber awareness campaign aimed at protecting citizens from online scams, identity fraud and financial crimes perpetrated through matrimonial and social networking platforms. |
