Early Times Report
NEW DELHI, Aug 5: On the seventh anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35A, senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Shri Gulam Ali Khatana stated that the 2019 decision under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has ushered in a new era of peace, democratic empowerment, development, and equal opportunity in Jammu & Kashmir.
Addressing the media, Shri Khatana observed that previous governments, including the Congress and National Conference, were responsible for prolonged instability, dynastic politics, and developmental neglect in the region, which deprived youth of opportunities and weakened democratic institutions.
He noted that genuinely free and fair democratic processes were limited in the past, highlighting that major transparent elections were held in 1977 and subsequently in 2024 under the Modi Government, reflecting renewed public confidence in the democratic system.
Referring to the 1987 elections, he alleged that electoral malpractice contributed to political alienation, unrest, and prolonged violence in Jammu & Kashmir.
He further stated that narratives surrounding autonomy and self-rule weakened national integration and discouraged investment and developmental progress in the region.
Shri Khatana emphasized that the abrogation of Article 370 has significantly transformed Jammu & Kashmir, ensuring peace, improved governance, and accelerated development across all sectors.
He said that enhanced security conditions have enabled farmers to work without disruption, students to pursue education safely, youth to excel in sports and competitive examinations, and entrepreneurs to establish new enterprises.
Highlighting the growth of tourism, he noted that Jammu & Kashmir has emerged as a premier travel destination, with record tourist inflows to Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, and other locations, thereby generating substantial employment in hospitality, transport, and handicrafts.
He added that major infrastructure initiatives, including highways, tunnels, railways, and airports, have significantly strengthened connectivity and stimulated economic activity.
Shri Khatana further stated that agriculture, horticulture, and handicrafts have witnessed notable growth, with products such as apples, saffron, walnuts, and pashmina reaching wider markets, thereby enhancing the income of farmers and artisans.
He also highlighted advancements in healthcare, education, digital infrastructure, and skill development, with the establishment of new medical colleges, AIIMS facilities, universities, and training centres expanding opportunities for youth.
