It is very unfortunate that on Monday and Tuesday that is 3rd and 4th of August 2026, there were heavy rainfall and cloudbursts in Pahalgam, Ganderbal, Shopian, Bandipora, Kupwara, and before that in Rajouri and Poonch of Jammu division. Also on 5th of July cloudburst rocked Kulgam village and it is a serious issue. It, resulted in loss of lives, and damage to roads, bridges, houses and infrastructure. Several people got killed in various parts of Kashmir. It has been reported that in 2026 till date in 36 cloudbursts ,31 people lost their lives and it is a cause of serious and grave concern. On a cursory look we say that a man has no control over natural fury, correct, but it is also true that cloudbursts and flash floods in Jammu and Kashmir are also of our own creation and are partly man-made. Men and women have become very greedy and they have time and again tinkered with the natures scheme of things and have degraded, downgraded environment by cutting trees, narrowing the rivers, streams, encroaching the bank of rivers, ponds and other water bodies. People have constructed houses on the banks of rivers and have even tried to change the natural course of rivers and rivulets and the bad consequences of damaging the nature’s bounty are before our eyes in the form of cloudbursts, flash floods, excessive rainfall, climate change and global warming and we are thus helpless and hapless before the nature and have to tolerate these vagaries of monsoons. But still, we have time to act responsibly and end tinkering with nature and plant trees and not to narrow the rivers and rivulets and also avoid encroachments on banks of rivers. So, we can say still it is not too late and we should awake from the deep slumber and be responsible citizens and as for as possible cease playing and damaging as well as tinkering with nature as in that case nature harms us and our belongings. Cloudbursts have emerged as one of the most destructive natural hazards in Jammu & Kashmir. Over the past decade, the region has witnessed an alarming increase in incidents of intense localized rainfall, resulting in flash floods, landslides, loss of life, destruction of infrastructure, and severe economic setbacks. These disasters which are partly designed by people themselves are no longer isolated events but a recurring challenge that require a comprehensive and scientific approach. What is a Cloudburst? A cloudburst is an extreme weather event in which an exceptionally heavy amount of rainfall –often over 100mm within an hour –falls over a small geographical area usually a few kilometres. Such, rainfall overwhelms the land’s capacity to absorb water, leading to sudden flash floods and debris flows. The Himalayan terrain of Jammu and Kashmir, characterised by steep slopes and narrow valleys, makes the region particularly vulnerable to the devastating effects of cloudbursts. Why Jammu & Kashmir is Highly vulnerable 1]---Fragile Himalayan Ecosystem----The Himalayan mountains are geographically young and unstable. There, fragile slopes are prone to erosion, landslides, and rockfalls. During intense rainfall, loose soil and rocks are easily washed downhill. 2]---Climate Change----Scientists increasingly link the growing frequency of extreme weather events to climate change. Rising temperatures increase atmospheric moisture, making intense rainfall events more likely/. 3]---Deforestation---The removal of forests reduces the land’s ability to absorb rainwater. Tree roots bind soil together, without them, slopes become unstable and susceptible to landslides. 4]----Unplanned Urbanization----Rapid construction in floodplain, along riverbanks, and on unstable slopes has increased the risk of damage during cloudbursts. Encroachments on natural drainage channels worsens flooding. 5]----Changing Rainfall Patterns-----Instead of receiving moderate rainfall over several days, the region increasingly experiences short-duration high-intensity rainfall, leading flash floods. Major Consequences----A---Loss of Human Lives----Cloudbursts can trigger sudden floods with little warning, trapping residents, tourists, and pilgrims. B---Damage to Infrastructure----Roads, bridges, tunnels, schools, hospitals, electricity networks, and water supply systems often suffer extensive damage. It, has happened in many parts of Kashmir most recently. C----Agricultural Losses----Standing crops, orchards, and fertile agricultural land are washed away, affecting farmers livelihoods. D---Tourism Setback---Jammu and Kashmir tourism sector has suffered due to damaged infrastructure, cancelled trips, and safety concerns. E---Environmental Degradation-----Cloudbursts cause severe soil erosion, river siltation, destruction of forests, and loss o0f biodiversity. F----Economic Burden----Governments must spend huge sums on rescue operations, compensation, and rebuilding damaged infrastructure. Challenges in Managing Cloudbursts----a---Cloudbursts develop rapidly and are difficult to predict accurately. b-----Mountain weather changes quickly. c---Remote villages often have limited communication and road connectivity. d----Rescue operations become difficult due to landslides, and damaged roads. Measures to Control Their Impact----While cloudbursts themselves cannot be prevented ,their devastating effects can be significantly reduced through preparedness and better planning. 1]---Advanced Weather Forecasting-----Installing more Doppler Weather Radars and automatic weather stations in mountainous regions can improve short-term forecasting. 2]----Early Warning Systems---Real-time alerts through mobile phones, sirens, radio, and local administration can help people move to safer locations. 3]---Scientific Land-Use Planning-----Constructions should be prohibited in flood prone areas, riverbanks, and unstable slopes. 4]----Afforestation----Large-scale plantation drives help stabilize slopes, reduce soil erosion, and improve water absorption. 5]-----Strengthening Infrastructure----Roads, bridges, and drainage systems should be designed to withstand extreme rainfall events. 6]----River and Drainage Management-----Regular desilting of rivers and restoration of natural drainage channels can reduce flooding. 7]---Community Awareness----People should be educated about evacuation procedures, emergency kits, and recognising early signs of landslides, and flash floods. 8]----Disaster Preparedness---Regular mock drills, trained disaster response teams, and adequate emergency supplies should be available in vulnerable districts. 9]----Satellite & GIS Monitoring----Remote sensing and Geographic information Systems [GIS] can identity high -risk zones and support disaster planning. 10]----Infrastructure projects should incorporate climate risk assessments and disaster -resilient engineering. Role of Government & Institutions----a---Strengthen the capacity of disaster management authorities. b----Improve coordination among meteorological agencies, district administration, and emergency services. c---Encourage scientific research on Himalayan weather patterns. d-----Provide timely compensation and rehabilitation to affected families. e----Promote sustainable tourism and environmentally responsible development. Role of Citizens-----Follow official weather advisories, avoid travelling to vulnerable areas during heavy rainfall, do not build houses on unstable slopes or floodplains, participate in disaster preparedness programmes, and help protect forests and water bodies. Recurring cloudbursts in Jammu and Kashmir are a stark reminder of the growing challenges posed by climate change, ecological degradation, and unplanned development. Although, cloudbursts cannot be stopped, their impact can be substantially minimized through scientific forecasting, resilient infrastructure, environmental conservation, strict land use regulations, and community preparedness. Protecting the fragile Himalayan - ecosystem while promoting sustainable development is essential to safeguard lives, livelihoods, and long-term future of Jammu and Kashmir. Only a coordinated effort involving governments, scientists, local communities, and citizens can build resilience against these increasingly frequent and destructive natural disasters.
