Jammu, Aug 8: Jammu and Kashmir Police has issued a detailed cyber safety advisory warning people about the growing misuse of artificial intelligence (AI), deepfake and photo-morphing technologies by cyber criminals to create fake identities, manipulated videos and impersonation scams using publicly available personal content.
The police cautioned that a social media profile that may appear harmless to its owner can provide valuable material to cyber criminals. With the rapid advancement of AI-powered tools, publicly available photographs, videos, reels and even voice clips can be manipulated and repurposed to create highly convincing fake content that can be difficult to distinguish from genuine material.
According to the advisory, criminals can misuse such content for impersonation, fraud, cyber harassment, blackmail and other forms of online abuse. The police emphasised that cyber harassment and the misuse of digital content for criminal purposes are punishable offences.
J&K Police said the threat becomes more serious when users make excessive personal information available in the public domain. Photographs, identity documents, voice recordings, location tags and seemingly routine social media posts can provide criminals with enough information to impersonate individuals, construct fake profiles or manipulate digital content.
The police urged citizens to exercise greater caution while posting personal material online and to think carefully before making photographs, videos and other sensitive information publicly accessible. Users were advised to avoid unnecessarily sharing personal details and to use masked copies of Aadhaar and other sensitive documents whenever such documents have to be shared digitally.
The advisory also stressed the importance of strengthening the security of social media and other online accounts. Citizens were encouraged to review their privacy settings regularly and enable two-factor authentication wherever available. Suspicious direct messages, fake accounts, impersonation attempts and phishing links should be reported immediately rather than opened, shared or responded to.
The police further advised people who become victims of cyber crime to report the incident through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal so that appropriate action can be initiated. Women and children can also report certain cyber incidents anonymously, providing an additional avenue for victims who may be hesitant to disclose their identities.
J&K Police also drew attention to the increasing danger of manipulated intimate content being circulated online without the consent of the person concerned. Victims facing such abuse can seek assistance through platforms such as StopNCII, which provides mechanisms to help prevent or remove eligible non-consensual intimate images from participating platforms.
The police said public awareness is an important component of preventing cyber crime, particularly as criminals increasingly exploit sophisticated digital technologies. It announced that upcoming awareness videos would explain how users can identify deepfake videos and recognise subtle warning signs that are often overlooked.
The advisory urged citizens to remain vigilant about their digital footprint and to remember that content shared publicly online can potentially be copied, altered and misused. The police stressed that maintaining strong privacy controls, limiting the amount of personal information shared online and promptly reporting suspicious activity can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to AI-enabled cyber crime. |
