J&K set to celebrate 80th Independence Day with patriotic fervour

Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 14: From the shrine-lined lanes of downtown Srinagar to the border hamlets of Poonch and the temple towns of Jammu, the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has turned saffron, white and green. With the nation gearing up to celebrate its 80th Independence Day, an unprecedented wave of Tiranga rallies has swept across every district of the Union Territory — a spectacle of unity that administration officials and local residents alike are calling one of the most emphatic patriotic mobilisations the region has witnessed in years.
Under tight, multi-layered security arrangements, processions of students, government employees, ex-servicemen, women's groups and local youth clubs marched through markets, university campuses and remote hill villages, tricolours held aloft, patriotic slogans echoing off shopfronts that were once shuttered by fear. What was once unthinkable in several sensitive pockets of the Valley has, this year, become routine: open, unguarded celebration of the national flag.
Officials tracking the rallies describe the turnout as extraordinary in both scale and geographic spread. Unlike previous years, when Tiranga marches were largely confined to Jammu's plains and select urban centres of the Valley, this year's processions reportedly reached far-flung and historically volatile areas — border villages, forest fringes and localities once associated with separatist sympathy. Local administrators are framing the exercise as more than ceremonial: it is being read as a deliberate, community-driven signal to separatist networks and anti-national elements that their narrative has lost ground on the street.
Security forces, working in close coordination with civil administration, threw a tight security cordon around every rally route, deploying additional companies of paramilitary personnel, drone surveillance and plainclothes intelligence teams to ensure the celebrations passed off without incident. The scale of the security bandobast itself underlines how seriously the establishment is treating both the symbolic weight of the exercise and the residual threat perception in the region.
Participants — many of them young students and first-time marchers — carried banners invoking national unity and constitutional pride, with several rallies converging at prominent public squares for flag-hoisting ceremonies and renditions of patriotic songs. Local leaders addressing the gatherings repeatedly invoked the theme of a "New Jammu and Kashmir," asserting that the massive turnout was proof that the region's youth have decisively rejected the politics of separatism and violence in favour of participation in the national mainstream.
For a Union Territory that has spent decades associated in the national imagination with bandhs, stone-pelting and flag-burning, the optics of tens of thousands willingly marching behind the Tricolour carry unmistakable political weight — both as a morale-booster for the security establishment and as a pointed rebuttal to elements still attempting to keep the separatist narrative alive.
Officials have reiterated that security will remain on high alert through the celebrations, with sensitive districts placed under close watch even as the larger message — of a region embracing the national flag with open arms — is allowed to take centre stage.
As the Tricolour flutters over Srinagar's Lal Chowk, Jammu's Bahu Fort and villages along the Line of Control alike, the message from Jammu and Kashmir this Independence Day appears unambiguous: patriotism, not separatism, now defines the street.
