JAMMU, Aug 14: The Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages today organised Partition Horrors Remembrance Day (Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas) at Jammu to commemorate the memories, sufferings and massive displacement of millions of people during the Partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947.
Arvind Gupta, Member Legislative Assembly, Jammu West, was the Chief Guest, while Padam Shri Jitender Udhampuri was the Special Guest. Sonali Arun Gupta, Special Secretary, JKAACL; Dr. Javaid Rahi, Chief Editor, JKAACL and Secretary, Kala Kendra Jammu; Dr. Nitan Sharma, Faculty, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University; and Meenakshi Slathia, Deputy Advocate General, J&K High Court, were part of the presidium.
Welcoming the guests and participants, Sonali Arun Gupta said that the observance was aimed at commemorating the memories, sufferings, sacrifices and displacement of millions of people who were affected by the Partition of 1947. She emphasised the importance of preserving the historical memory of the tragedy for future generations.
Speaking on the occasion, Arvind Gupta said that the Partition of the Indian subcontinent remains a solemn reminder of the immense human suffering caused by one of the most traumatic episodes in modern history. He narrated his own families story of migration uprooted from PoJK.He stressed that the struggles, sacrifices and resilience of those affected by the largest migrations in history must always be remembered. Such human tragedy teach a lesson that we must remained united against any further division, he added.
Dr. Jitender Udhampuri read out a poem on partition of 1947 in Hindi and narrated the story of partition.
In his scholarly presentation, Dr. Nitan Sharma highlighted the core message of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, stating that remembering the tragedy should promote social harmony, unity and human empowerment, while standing firmly against hatred, violence and division.
Meenakshi Slathia, Deputy Advocate General, High Court J&K and Ladakh, emphasised the importance of remembering the resilience of survivors who, despite immense adversity and loss, rebuilt their lives with courage and determination.
As part of the programme, the Academy also organised an exhibition of archival photographs depicting the events and human consequences of Partition. Documentary films highlighting the historical realities and experiences associated with the Partition were also screened. |
