| Rohingya, Bangladeshi figures differ: Demographic panel to scrutinise data | | | Sanjay Pandita Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 22: The High Level Committee on Demographic Change is set to undertake a detailed examination of the data and memorandums submitted during its three-day visit to Jammu from August 10 to 12, as the panel seeks to build a comprehensive picture of demographic trends in Jammu and Kashmir. During its maiden visit to Jammu, the committee held interactions with representatives from different sections of society, besides meeting senior police and civil administration officers. The panel also met members of various social organisations and representatives of civil society groups. During these interactions, members of the committee received a number of memorandums containing concerns and demands related to demographic changes, migration, settlement patterns and other issues raised by different sections of society. Highly placed sources said the committee would thoroughly examine the official data shared by government officers along with the memorandums submitted by social organisations and civil society representatives before drawing any conclusions. Sources said the committee has received differing figures from various sources regarding the number of Rohingyas and Bangladeshi nationals residing in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the Jammu region. The variations in the figures provided by different officials and the information contained in memorandums are likely to be among the issues examined by the panel during its detailed assessment. “The committee will examine all the data and memorandums before deciding on the course of further action,” highly placed sources said. According to sources, the panel is expected to cross-check the figures and other information submitted during its visit and may seek additional details from the concerned departments wherever necessary. The committee is also likely to study the memorandums submitted by various organisations alongside official records to understand the nature and extent of the demographic concerns raised before it. Sources maintained that no final view would be taken merely on the basis of the information received during the three-day visit and that the committee would first undertake a comprehensive assessment of the available material. The High Level Committee on Demographic Change was constituted to study demographic changes in Jammu and Kashmir. Its visit to Jammu was significant as it provided the panel an opportunity to directly interact with government officials, social organisations and civil society representatives and hear their concerns. The committee is expected to continue its examination of the material collected during the visit before deciding on its future course of action. |
