| The classrooms may become intelligent, immersive and borderless—but the future of education will still depend on something no machine can manufacture: the human influence of a good teacher. Imagine the morning of September 5, 2035. The school bell may no longer be the metallic sound that generations of students remember. A classroom may not even be defined by four walls, rows of desks and a blackboard. Some students may enter lessons through immersive digital environments. Artificial intelligence may prepare exercises according to individual learning levels. Former students living thousands of kilometres away may join a Teachers’ Day celebration virtually and stand, at least digitally, beside the teacher who once changed the direction of their lives. The chalk may disappear. The blackboard may become an intelligent screen. The register may become automatic. But one question will remain: What exactly are we celebrating when we celebrate a teacher? That question may become more important in 2035 than it is today. From Teaching Information to Guiding Human Beings For generations, much of a teacher’s working life has been consumed by tasks surrounding teaching rather than teaching itself: preparing exercises, checking assignments, recording attendance, producing reports, calculating grades and repeatedly explaining material that different students understand at different speeds. Artificial intelligence is already beginning to challenge that model. By 2035, AI systems may be able to prepare differentiated exercises, identify areas where students are struggling, generate preliminary feedback, assist with routine assessment and help teachers plan lessons more efficiently. If used wisely, this could be one of technology’s greatest gifts to education. Not because it would make the teacher unnecessary—but because it could allow the teacher to become more fully a teacher. A machine can check whether an answer is numerically correct. A good teacher notices why a student has suddenly stopped participating. An algorithm can recommend another exercise. A teacher can recognise that the student who repeatedly says, “I cannot do mathematics,” may actually be saying, “I no longer believe in myself.” Technology can deliver information. Education requires something more. It requires encouragement, judgment, patience, discipline, empathy, inspiration and sometimes the courage to tell a young person a truth that no algorithm would know when or how to say. The great educational question of 2035 therefore may not be, “Can artificial intelligence teach?” It may be: “What parts of teaching should never be surrendered to artificial intelligence?” The Best Teachers’ Day Gift May Be Time Today, teachers are often honoured with flowers, greeting cards, speeches, plaques and photographs. All are meaningful expressions of affection. But perhaps by 2035 society will have matured enough to understand that respect should also be institutional. What if the most valuable Teachers’ Day gift were not a bouquet but five hours returned to a teacher every week because unnecessary administrative work had been automated? What if appreciation meant smaller bureaucratic burdens? What if schools invested as much in teacher development as they invested in classroom technology? What if every teacher received serious training before being asked to use artificial intelligence? What if technology were introduced with teachers rather than merely imposed on them? That would represent a far more important transformation than replacing a blackboard with a hologram. The true purpose of educational technology should not be to create a spectacular classroom. It should be to create conditions in which better teaching becomes possible. But Technology Could Also Create a New Divide There is another side to the story. The classroom of 2035 may be intelligent, immersive and connected—but whose classroom? A prestigious school in Bengaluru, Delhi, Dubai or Singapore may be able to afford advanced learning systems, sophisticated simulations and personalised AI platforms. A village school may still be struggling with connectivity, equipment or adequate staffing. A future in which one child studies with advanced digital tutors while another shares outdated resources would not represent educational progress. It would merely transform an old inequality into a technological one. Therefore, the success of educational technology cannot be measured by asking how advanced the best schools have become. We must ask: How far has the weakest school been able to move forward? Imagine instead a rural teacher in Bihar, Kashmir, Rajasthan or the Northeast being able to connect students with an expert scientist, historian or mathematician hundreds of kilometres away. Imagine retired teachers continuing to mentor students without leaving their homes. Imagine students from urban and rural schools collaborating on the same projects and presenting their work together. That is the kind of technological future worth building—not technology as spectacle, but technology as access. The Teacher Must Control the Technology There is also a danger in assuming that every technological advance is automatically educational progress. AI systems depend on data. Educational data concern children—their performance, behaviour, weaknesses, learning patterns and sometimes highly personal information.Who owns that data? Who decides how it is used? Can an algorithm label a child as “weak” too early? Should software determine a student’s academic future? Should teachers be expected simply to accept recommendations produced by systems they did not design and may not fully understand? By 2035, digital literacy for teachers will therefore have to mean much more than knowing which button to press. Teachers will need the confidence to question technology. They must be able to say: “This recommendation is mathematically correct but educationally inappropriate.” Or: “This prediction does not understand this child.” The intelligent classroom of the future must never become a classroom in which human judgment has been outsourced. Artificial intelligence should sit beside the teacher—not above the teacher. From Ceremonial Respect to Teacher Well-Being There is another transformation Teachers’ Day desperately needs. For one day every year, teachers receive messages of gratitude. For the remaining days, many face deadlines, administrative responsibilities, changing technologies, demanding institutional expectations and the emotional burden of guiding large numbers of young people. By 2035, perhaps society will recognise that teacher appreciation cannot be separated from teacher well-being. A plaque saying “Best Teacher” means little if the recipient is exhausted. A Teachers’ Day speech praising educators as “nation builders” becomes hollow when those same educators are given no meaningful voice in decisions affecting their classrooms. Real appreciation should therefore include reasonable workloads, opportunities for professional development, institutional respect and the freedom to exercise professional judgment. The future of Teachers’ Day should move from symbolic gratitude to structural respect. The Celebration Itself May Change Of course, the celebration may become spectacular. A retired teacher in Kolkata could enter a virtual auditorium and suddenly find hundreds of former students joining from different countries. Instead of a paper greeting card, students might create a digital archive containing photographs, classroom memories, recorded messages and stories describing how their teacher influenced their lives. A student who was once afraid of mathematics could return twenty years later and say: “Sir, you probably don’t remember me. But one sentence you said changed my life.” No expensive technology could improve upon that moment. The medium might be digital. The gratitude would remain entirely human. What Cannot Be Automated India observes Teachers’ Day on September 5 in honour of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan—a philosopher, scholar, teacher and former President whose birthday became associated with a national tribute to educators. More than seven decades later, education stands before a technological transformation that previous generations could scarcely have imagined. By 2035, students may learn with tools we cannot yet accurately predict. Today’s screens may appear as old-fashioned as yesterday’s slate. Artificial intelligence may become an ordinary classroom companion. Virtual laboratories may allow students to conduct experiments impossible in their physical schools. Language barriers may fall. Distance may matter less. Information may become almost instantly available. And precisely because information will become so easily available, the human role of the teacher may become more important rather than less. When answers are everywhere, students need someone to teach them which questions are worth asking. When machines can generate convincing arguments, students need someone to teach them how to distinguish evidence from manipulation. When algorithms increasingly influence decisions, young people need someone to teach them ethics. When knowledge expands faster than any individual can absorb it, students need someone to teach them how to think. And when a young person loses confidence, direction or hope, no database can replace the influence of a teacher who says: “Try once more. I know you can do this.” Perhaps that will be the real meaning of Teachers’ Day in 2035. The chalk may disappear. The blackboard may become a wall of light. Artificial intelligence may become the teacher’s most powerful assistant. But education will still require something technology cannot download, automate or manufacture: a human being capable of recognising possibility inside another human being. And as long as that remains true, the teacher will not become obsolete. The teacher will become even more important. |
