| Suspense over Ashok Kaul’s successor as Sangh Parivar maintains silence | | | Sanjay Pandita Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 1: A week after Ashok Kaul stepped down as organisation general secretary of the J&K BJP, the party has still not named his successor. The Sangh Parivar leadership has maintained a guarded silence. Highly placed sources said the appointment will be decided by the Sangh Parivar’s top leadership, as only a Pracharak is eligible for this organisational post. Kaul, a senior J&K BJP leader, held the post for nearly 12 years, making him the longest-serving general secretary of the organisation. He resigned citing advancing age and health concerns, which he said made it difficult to continue his organisational duties. His exit comes days after the BJP’s central leadership announced a fresh round of organisation general secretary appointments across several states. On September 24, party president Nitin Nabin approved new appointments for Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Goa, among others. No successor has yet been named for Jammu and Kashmir. Party sources indicate a new face is likely to be chosen in the coming months. J&K BJP leaders confirmed that Kaul had sought to be relieved of his responsibilities nearly a year ago. According to reports, his health problems and age had made it increasingly hard to discharge his duties with the same rigour as before. After reviewing his request, the party leadership decided to relieve him, and the responsibility will now pass to another leader. Reports also said a decision on Kaul’s new role will be taken at the next Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha of the RSS, likely to be held after the Vijayadashami programme. During his long tenure, Kaul played a central role in strengthening the BJP’s organisational structure in Jammu and Kashmir. He drove the party’s expansion down to the booth level and fostered closer coordination among workers. His responsibilities included chairing organisational meetings, coordinating outreach campaigns and holding regular review sessions with office-bearers at every level of the party. He worked closely with district presidents, assembly-segment functionaries and grassroots workers in both the Jammu and Kashmir regions to build the party’s network. He was also instrumental in programmes aimed at taking central government schemes and party policies to the ground level. With his exit, all eyes now turn to who the BJP will choose as its next organisation general secretary in Jammu and Kashmir. |
