| LG Sinha assures Bharat Priye of action on Chenab Channelisation, crops protection | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 8: The long-pending issue of proper channelisation and management of the Chenab River and its canal system came into sharp focus during a meeting between JKPCC Kissan Congress Chairman Bharat Priye and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha at Lok Bhawan, Srinagar, with the LG assuring that the concerns of farmers would be examined and appropriate measures taken. During the meeting, Bharat Priye placed before the Lieutenant Governor the difficulties being faced by farmers dependent on the Chenab canal system, particularly the problem of inadequate water reaching tail-end agricultural areas and the recurring damage caused when excess river and canal water spills into cultivated fields. Priye stressed that the issue was not merely about irrigation but directly concerned the livelihood, agricultural productivity and protection of fertile farmland in several areas of Jammu, particularly the border belt of Pargwal and different parts of Akhnoor. He urged the UT Administration to undertake scientific and systematic channelisation of the Chenab, along with strengthening of the canal network, so that irrigation water is efficiently distributed and reaches farmers at the tail end rather than being lost before reaching fields. A major concern projected by Priye was the recurring overflow of water into agricultural fields during periods of high discharge. He pointed out that such flooding can damage standing crops and, apart from immediate crop losses, wash away the fertile topsoil on which farmers depend for future cultivation. Priye emphasised that protecting agricultural land from erosion should be treated as an integral part of flood and irrigation management. He sought effective engineering and flood-protection measures at vulnerable locations to prevent river and canal water from entering cultivated areas and causing repeated losses to farmers. The Kissan Congress Chairman also highlighted the particular vulnerability of farmers in the Pargwal border area, where agricultural land is an important source of livelihood. He urged the administration to adopt a long-term mechanism rather than relying only on relief measures after crops and agricultural land have already been damaged. According to Priye, the meeting provided an opportunity to place the concerns of the farming community directly before the Lieutenant Governor. He said the assurance received from the LG regarding examination of the issues was significant, particularly because the concerns relate to both water availability for irrigation and protection of farmland from excessive water flow. |
